In 2023, consumption of non-domestic heat exchange units decreased by -3.3% to 79M units for the first time since 2019, thus ending a three-year rising trend. The total consumption volume increased at an average annual rate of +4.0% over the period from 2013 to 2023; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. Global consumption peaked at 82M units in 2022, and then declined in the following year.

The global non-domestic heat exchange unit market size shrank to $102B in 2023, which is down by -2.7% against the previous year. This figure reflects the total revenues of producers and importers (excluding logistics costs, retail marketing costs, and retailers' margins, which will be included in the final consumer price). In general, the total consumption indicated a resilient expansion from 2013 to 2023: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.6% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2023 figures, consumption increased by +17.6% against 2019 indices. Over the period under review, the global market hit record highs at $105.5B in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2023, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

The countries with the highest volumes of consumption in 2023 were the United States (9.7M units), China (8.1M units) and Germany (6.8M units), with a combined 31% share of global consumption. India, Turkey, Brazil, Italy, Mexico, Thailand, Japan, Indonesia, Poland and Russia lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 44%.

From 2013 to 2023, the biggest increases were recorded for Thailand (with a CAGR of +15.6%), while consumption for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Turkey ($13.3B), Germany ($10.8B) and Japan ($6.7B) constituted the countries with the highest levels of market value in 2023, together comprising 30% of the global market. Italy, Thailand, Indonesia, China, Mexico, Russia, Poland, India, the United States and Brazil lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 23%.

Among the main consuming countries, Poland, with a CAGR of +17.2%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to market size over the period under review, while market for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The countries with the highest levels of non-domestic heat exchange unit per capita consumption in 2023 were Germany (82 units per 1000 persons), Turkey (73 units per 1000 persons) and Italy (61 units per 1000 persons).

The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 16%. Over the period under review, global production reached the peak volume in 2023 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, non-domestic heat exchange unit production fell to $93.4B in 2023 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, the total production indicated a prominent expansion from 2013 to 2023: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.2% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2023 figures, production increased by +11.7% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of 38% against the previous year. Over the period under review, global production hit record highs at $102.5B in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2023, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Production By Country

China (17M units) remains the largest non-domestic heat exchange unit producing country worldwide, accounting for 26% of total volume. Moreover, non-domestic heat exchange unit production in China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Germany (6.5M units), threefold. Turkey (6.3M units) ranked third in terms of total production with a 9.7% share.

In China, non-domestic heat exchange unit production increased at an average annual rate of +10.1% over the period from 2013-2023. The remaining producing countries recorded the following average annual rates of production growth: Germany (+13.8% per year) and Turkey (+14.7% per year).

Imports

World Imports of Non-Domestic Heat Exchange Units

For the third year in a row, the global market recorded growth in supplies from abroad of non-domestic heat exchange units, which increased by 0.7% to 38M units in 2023. In general, imports continue to indicate a strong expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when imports increased by 46%. Global imports peaked in 2023 and are likely to see steady growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, non-domestic heat exchange unit imports rose significantly to $13.4B in 2023. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +3.4% over the period from 2013 to 2023; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Imports By Country

In 2023, the United States (13M units) was the major importer of non-domestic heat exchange units, generating 34% of total imports. Brazil (5.6M units) took the second position in the ranking, followed by India (3.7M units) and Mexico (3M units). All these countries together held near 33% share of total imports. Canada (1,213K units), Germany (1,138K units), Thailand (1,065K units), South Korea (816K units), China (723K units) and Malaysia (587K units) took a relatively small share of total imports.

Moreover, India emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in the world, with a CAGR of +29.4% from 2013-2023. India (+8 p.p.), the United States (+3.6 p.p.), Germany (+3 p.p.) and South Korea (+1.6 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the global imports, while Canada and Brazil saw its share reduced by -3% and -11.5% from 2013 to 2023, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the largest non-domestic heat exchange unit importing markets worldwide were the United States ($1.6B), Germany ($1.3B) and China ($943M), together accounting for 29% of global imports. Canada, Mexico, India, South Korea, Malaysia, Brazil and Thailand lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 14%.

In terms of the main importing countries, India, with a CAGR of +10.5%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average non-domestic heat exchange unit import price stood at $356 per unit in 2023, rising by 13% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, recorded a abrupt shrinkage. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 an increase of 17%. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $693 per unit. From 2015 to 2023, the average import prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was China ($1.3 thousand per unit), while Brazil ($35 per unit) was amongst the lowest.

China was also the fastest-growing in terms of the non-domestic heat exchange units exports, with a CAGR of +29.2% from 2013 to 2023. At the same time, Hungary (+23.2%), Malaysia (+18.0%), Italy (+16.0%), the United States (+14.1%), Brazil (+14.0%), Sweden (+11.4%), Mexico (+10.8%), Germany (+9.4%), India (+9.2%), South Korea (+6.8%) and Taiwan (Chinese) (+3.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. While the share of China (+22 p.p.), Italy (+5.4 p.p.), Germany (+3.8 p.p.), Hungary (+2.3 p.p.) and Sweden (+2.2 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the global exports from 2013-2023, the share of Mexico (-2.5 p.p.), South Korea (-4 p.p.), Taiwan (Chinese) (-5.3 p.p.), the United States (-8.5 p.p.) and India (-9.5 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the largest non-domestic heat exchange unit supplying countries worldwide were China ($2B), the United States ($1.5B) and Italy ($1.4B), together accounting for 34% of global exports. Germany, Sweden, Mexico, South Korea, Hungary, India, Malaysia, Brazil and Taiwan (Chinese) lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 27%.

Among the main exporting countries, Mexico, with a CAGR of +21.7%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices By Country

The average non-domestic heat exchange unit export price stood at $613 per unit in 2023, remaining relatively unchanged against the previous year. In general, the export price faced a deep contraction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2022 when the average export price increased by 4.7% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average export prices reached the maximum at $2.2 thousand per unit in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2023, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2023, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Germany ($1.6 thousand per unit), while India ($139 per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2013 to 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Mexico (+9.8%), while the other global leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.
