World Consumption of Nonwoven Fabric

In 2024, the amount of nonwoven fabrics consumed worldwide contracted to 19M tons, waning by -1.7% on 2023 figures. The total consumption volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.4% from 2013 to 2024; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. Global consumption peaked at 20M tons in 2021; however, from 2022 to 2024, consumption failed to regain momentum.

The global nonwoven fabric market revenue reduced slightly to $66.5B in 2024, remaining relatively unchanged against the previous year. This figure reflects the total revenues of producers and importers (excluding logistics costs, retail marketing costs, and retailers' margins, which will be included in the final consumer price). The market value increased at an average annual rate of +2.7% over the period from 2013 to 2024; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Over the period under review, the global market reached the maximum level at $75.7B in 2021; however, from 2022 to 2024, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Consumption By Country

The country with the largest volume of nonwoven fabric consumption was Russia (6.5M tons), accounting for 35% of total volume. Moreover, nonwoven fabric consumption in Russia exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest consumer, China (3.1M tons), twofold. The third position in this ranking was held by the United States (1.1M tons), with a 5.7% share.

In value terms, the largest nonwoven fabric markets worldwide were Russia ($16B), China ($10B) and the United States ($6.5B), together accounting for 49% of the global market. Turkey, Japan, Indonesia, Brazil, Germany, Italy and Canada lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 23%.

Turkey, with a CAGR of +15.0%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to market size in terms of the main consuming countries over the period under review, while market for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2024, the highest levels of nonwoven fabric per capita consumption was registered in Russia (46 kg per person), followed by Canada (7.1 kg per person), Italy (6 kg per person) and Germany (4.3 kg per person), while the world average per capita consumption of nonwoven fabric was estimated at 2.3 kg per person.

In Russia, nonwoven fabric per capita consumption expanded at an average annual rate of +7.2% over the period from 2013-2024. The remaining consuming countries recorded the following average annual rates of per capita consumption growth: Canada (+1.3% per year) and Italy (+2.5% per year).

Production

World Production of Nonwoven Fabric

In 2024, global production of nonwoven fabrics reduced modestly to 19M tons, almost unchanged from the previous year. The total output volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.6% over the period from 2013 to 2024; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when the production volume increased by 14%. Over the period under review, global production reached the maximum volume at 20M tons in 2021; however, from 2022 to 2024, production remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, nonwoven fabric production shrank slightly to $68.5B in 2024 estimated in export price. The total output value increased at an average annual rate of +2.7% over the period from 2013 to 2024; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 30%. Over the period under review, global production attained the peak level at $76.3B in 2021; however, from 2022 to 2024, production remained at a lower figure.

Production By Country

The countries with the highest volumes of production in 2024 were Russia (6.5M tons), China (4.4M tons) and the United States (888K tons), with a combined 63% share of global production.

From 2013 to 2024, the biggest increases were recorded for Russia (with a CAGR of +7.4%), while production for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports

World Imports of Nonwoven Fabric

In 2024, overseas purchases of nonwoven fabrics decreased by -8.9% to 3.6M tons, falling for the fourth consecutive year after eight years of growth. In general, total imports indicated a modest increase from 2013 to 2024: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.7% over the last eleven-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2024 figures, imports decreased by -27.4% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when imports increased by 27% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of 4.9M tons. From 2021 to 2024, the growth of global imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, nonwoven fabric imports dropped to $15B in 2024. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +1.2% from 2013 to 2024; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 14% against the previous year. Global imports peaked at $19.1B in 2021; however, from 2022 to 2024, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports By Country

In 2024, the United States (414K tons), followed by Japan (241K tons) and Germany (171K tons) were the key importers of nonwoven fabrics, together comprising 23% of total imports. South Korea (145K tons), Vietnam (130K tons), the Czech Republic (119K tons), Poland (118K tons), the UK (116K tons), Canada (111K tons) and Italy (96K tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2013 to 2024, the biggest increases were recorded for South Korea (with a CAGR of +7.7%), while purchases for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the United States ($1.8B) constitutes the largest market for imported nonwoven fabrics worldwide, comprising 12% of global imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Germany ($896M), with a 6% share of global imports. It was followed by Japan, with a 4.6% share.

From 2013 to 2024, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in the United States amounted to +4.5%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Germany (-1.3% per year) and Japan (+1.6% per year).

Import Prices By Country

The average nonwoven fabric import price stood at $4,207 per ton in 2024, remaining stable against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when the average import price increased by 20% against the previous year. Over the period under review, average import prices hit record highs at $4,593 per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2024, import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2024, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Italy ($5,579 per ton), while Japan ($2,844 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2013 to 2024, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the UK (+2.2%), while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Exports

World Exports of Nonwoven Fabric

In 2024, overseas shipments of nonwoven fabrics decreased by -3.9% to 3.9M tons, falling for the third year in a row after five years of growth. The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.4% over the period from 2013 to 2024; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when exports increased by 15% against the previous year. The global exports peaked at 4.6M tons in 2021; however, from 2022 to 2024, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, nonwoven fabric exports reduced to $16B in 2024. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +1.1% over the period from 2013 to 2024; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when exports increased by 17%. The global exports peaked at $20.1B in 2021; however, from 2022 to 2024, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports By Country

China represented the main exporting country with an export of around 1.4M tons, which recorded 37% of total exports. Turkey (272K tons) held a 7% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by the United States (6.2%), Germany (5.9%) and Italy (5.1%). The following exporters - the Czech Republic (116K tons), the Netherlands (97K tons), Thailand (93K tons), Spain (92K tons) and India (80K tons) - together made up 12% of total exports.

From 2013 to 2024, average annual rates of growth with regard to nonwoven fabric exports from China stood at +9.1%. At the same time, Turkey (+10.4%), India (+9.6%) and Thailand (+6.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Turkey emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in the world, with a CAGR of +10.4% from 2013-2024. The Czech Republic, the Netherlands and Spain experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Italy (-1.8%), the United States (-2.6%) and Germany (-3.6%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of China (+19 p.p.) and Turkey (+3.9 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the global exports from 2013-2024, the share of Italy (-3 p.p.), the United States (-4.5 p.p.) and Germany (-5.6 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, China ($3.9B) remains the largest nonwoven fabric supplier worldwide, comprising 24% of global exports. The second position in the ranking was held by the United States ($1.8B), with an 11% share of global exports. It was followed by Germany, with a 9.7% share.

In China, nonwoven fabric exports increased at an average annual rate of +6.5% over the period from 2013-2024. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: the United States (-0.6% per year) and Germany (-3.1% per year).

Export Prices By Country

In 2024, the average nonwoven fabric export price amounted to $4,121 per ton, waning by -5.6% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price showed a mild downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the average export price increased by 4%. Over the period under review, the average export prices hit record highs at $4,774 per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2024, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2024, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the United States ($7,589 per ton), while India ($2,245 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2013 to 2024, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the United States (+2.0%), while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
