Nordstrom Revises Full-Year Sales Outlook After Strong Holiday Performance

Nordstrom has announced a positive revision to its full-year sales outlook following a robust holiday shopping season at its stores and online. The Seattle-based department store cited better-than-expected holiday sales performance as a catalyst for this change, a sentiment shared in a recent source article by CNBC. Despite the optimistic sales guidance, Nordstrom maintained its profit forecast.

According to Nordstrom's latest update, the company now anticipates full-year revenue growth to land between 1.5% and 2.5%, inclusive of the fewer fiscal weeks this year, contrasted with the prior forecast projecting flat to a 1% rise. Such figures offer a promising outlook in the retail sector, a key indicator of the U.S. economy's health. As data from IndexBox reveals, the broader U.S. retail sales saw a year-over-year increase of 3.8% for the period leading up to December 24, excluding automotive sales.

Highlighting specific segments, Nordstrom announced that net sales soared 4.9% during the nine-week holiday period ending January 4, while comparable sales, which exclude the effects of new store openings and closures, went up 5.8%. The company saw marked improvements at its main Nordstrom locations with a 3.7% rise in net sales and a 6.5% boost in comparable sales. Meanwhile, Nordstrom Rack, their off-price banner, experienced a 7.4% increase in net sales and a 4.3% jump in comparable sales.

The strong performance of Nordstrom during the holiday season comes amidst the founding family's ongoing efforts to privatize the retail giant through a $6.25 billion buyout deal with El Puerto de Liverpool, slated for completion by the first half of 2025. As the fiscal year progresses, all eyes are on Nordstrom's slated March 4 announcement of its full fourth-quarter and annual results, eagerly awaited by investors and market analysts.
