Canadian private equity powerhouse, Novacap Investments Inc., has successfully closed a substantial $1 billion fund aimed at investing in digital infrastructure assets, marking the end of a rigorous two-year fundraising journey. This ambitious fund will strategically target around ten regional companies primarily dealing in connectivity and data access services, each backed by significant physical assets. Novacap's investment strategy includes potentially allocating up to $100 million per company. The firm, based in Brossard, Quebec, which manages assets totaling approximately C$11 billion ($7.7 billion), initiated this fundraising at a challenging time characterized by rising interest rates and a tepid acquisition market, complicating capital raising efforts for many private equity entities.

The successful $1 billion close surpassed the initial target of $750 million, and Novacap has already begun deploying funds into four U.S. businesses, notable ones being H5 Data Centers LLC and All West Communications Inc., an internet service provider centered in Utah and Wyoming. Partnerships backing the fund include institutional entities, family offices, and affluent individuals from key regions such as North America, Europe, the Middle East, and Asia, although specific identities have not been disclosed.

Novacap Senior Partner Ted Mocarski emphasized the persistent demand for digital infrastructure, driven by explosive growth in artificial intelligence (AI) technologies. He indicated how technological progress continuously fuels the demand for enhanced power, storage, and connectivity. "We were all talking about the cloud 10 years ago. Now we're talking about AI," Mocarski remarked, underscoring the ongoing evolution in tech sectors.

Founded in 1981, Novacap is renowned for its investments in technology firms; however, it also holds interests in financial services and various consumer businesses, including women's clothing and mattress manufacturing companies. Novacap's investment narrative features lucrative ventures like the payment processor Nuvei Corp., a notable player in a $6.3 billion privatization effort by Advent International, where Novacap retains an 18% ownership stake.

CEO Pascal Tremblay, aged 55, forecasts that 2025 may not signal a substantial recovery for the private equity sector, pointing to it as a "strange year" due to the necessity of deploying capital locked in massive funds raised during the pandemic era. Alex Russ, Senior Managing Director at Evercore Inc., who advised Novacap on the fund, underscored the robust demand for Novacap's digital infrastructure fund, despite prevailing challenges in a fiercely competitive private equity landscape.
