Nu Holdings Weighs UK Domicile for Global Expansion

Nu Holdings, Nubank's Parent Company, Considers UK Domicile Amidst Expansive Plans

Nubank, known for being Latin America's most valuable lender, is contemplating a strategic shift in its legal domicile to the United Kingdom in anticipation of an international expansion strategy that could include the United States. This consideration was revealed by its founder and CEO, David Velez, in an interview with Reuters at the World Economic Forum in Davos.

The fintech giant, which has amassed over 100 million customers across Brazil, Mexico, and Colombia, is pondering this shift as part of a larger vision aimed at navigating favorable jurisdictions for the next decade of global growth. "We are actively thinking about which jurisdictions make sense for us as we foresee our global journey," said Velez, noting potential tax-related uncertainties.

While Europe holds potential due to its market size, Nubank prioritizes a legal European presence largely to manage administration and talent acquisition, rather than launching services amid regulatory constraints. Elsewhere, recent strategic investments, such as a $150 million stake in Singapore's Tyme Group, suggest Nubank's growing interest in emerging markets like South Africa and the Philippines.

Nu Holdings remains headquartered in the Cayman Islands but anticipates a move within 18 to 24 months, aligning with the new administration in the U.S., which Velez believes could foster a more favorable fintech and cryptocurrency environment.
