Nubank Invests $150 Million in Tyme Group's Expansion

Sao Paulo/Johannesburg – Brazilian digital bank Nubank has made a significant investment in Tyme Group, a rapidly expanding digital bank operating in South Africa and the Philippines. According to a report, Nubank contributed $150 million to the $250 million Series D funding round, which was also supported by M&G Catalyst Fund with $50 million and additional contributions from existing shareholders.

Tyme Group, headquartered in Singapore and backed by China's Tencent, has achieved unicorn status following this investment, reaching a valuation of $1.5 billion. The fresh capital is expected to support the group's strategic expansion into Southeast Asia, specifically targeting Vietnam and Indonesia.

"This funding will propel our growth strategy, enabling us to realize our stated goal of being a top three retail bank in South Africa in the next three years," stated Karl Westvig, CEO of TymeBank in South Africa. The affiliation with Nubank not only enhances Tyme Group's market visibility but also strengthens its pathway to a potential listing by 2028.

According to IndexBox data, the financial technology sector in Southeast Asia is expected to grow significantly, providing ample opportunities for digital banks like Tyme Group. Coen Jonker, co-founder and CEO of Tyme Group, had previously mentioned in discussions with Bloomberg a potential listing in New York and Johannesburg to capitalize on this growth trajectory.

Tyme Group's largest shareholder remains African Rainbow Capital, helmed by African billionaire Patrice Motsepe. With its strategic foothold in two dynamic markets and plans for further geographic diversification, Tyme Group is positioning itself to become a formidable player in the global digital banking space.
