Nucor's New Pricing Strategy Amid Financial Struggles

US steelmaker Nucor has announced a new pricing strategy for its hot rolled coil (HRC) products, setting a benchmark price of $760/mt for all production sites, excluding CSI, where the price will be $820/mt. This price adjustment, effective from January 27, 2025, reflects the company's strategic response to market conditions as outlined in their recent update source.

Despite the price increase, Nucor's financial performance took a substantial hit in 2024, with a reported 60% plunge in net profit during the fourth quarter, totaling $345 million compared to $873 million in the same period of 2023. The annual revenue also saw a significant decrease of 53% to $2.32 billion. Meanwhile, the company's EBITDA for 2024 stood at $4.36 billion, marking a 41% decline from 2023's $7.41 billion.

CEO Leon Topalian expressed cautious optimism about the future, expecting a recovery in the US steel market in 2025, driven by upcoming infrastructure projects and favorable economic trends. However, he acknowledged that first-quarter outcomes in 2025 for the steel and rolling segments might mirror those from the end of 2024, with a potential decline in the raw materials segment.

On the broader economic level, data from the IndexBox platform indicates that the export value of Flat Hot-Rolled Steel Coils in the United States remained steady at $1.3 billion for both 2023 and 2024. Notably, Mexico was the top export destination in 2023, with $877.6 million worth of exports, followed by Canada at $386.6 million. Meanwhile, import values showed a slight reduction from $2.6 billion in 2023 to $2.4 billion in 2024, with Canada leading as the top supplier, providing $1.4 billion worth of imports in 2023, followed by South Korea and Mexico.

This price adjustment comes even as current market rates for hot rolled coil in North America (Ex-Works) lingered around $665 per short tonne as of January 24, with unchanging supply conditions since the beginning of the year. The industry continues to monitor economic conditions and market demand closely, looking for signs of stabilization and growth.
