Orsted Revises Investment Plans Amidst Market Challenges

Copenhagen - Orsted, the world's largest offshore wind power developer, has announced that its core profit for this year is expected to be on par with or surpass 2024 levels. This announcement comes in the wake of a strategic decision to reduce investment plans by 25% for the upcoming years through 2030, aimed at strengthening the company's financial health amidst a turbulent market landscape.

Following Orsted's recent market statement, shares experienced a 6% rise in early trading, mitigating a year-to-date decline to approximately 8%. Financial analysts, like Jacob Pedersen from Sydbank, have expressed relief that the company is not pursuing additional capital increases, which many investors had been apprehensive about.

The offshore wind sector is currently navigating a myriad of challenges including elevated costs, supply chain disruptions, and postponements in project timelines. Orsted, despite these industry-wide obstacles, reports that most of its undertakings are on schedule. However, the company continues to encounter difficulties with its U.S.-based construction initiatives, particularly the Revolution Wind and Sunrise Wind projects.

Significantly, Orsted has successfully renegotiated and concluded contracts concerning the closure of its Ocean Wind projects in New Jersey. This resulted in a reversal of cancellation fees amounting to 7.3 billion crowns, surpassing initial projections.

Projected operating profits for 2025, excluding fresh partnerships and cancellation fees, are reported to lie between 25 billion and 28 billion Danish crowns (approximately $3.5 billion to $3.9 billion), aligning with industry analyst expectations. In its recently released full-year earnings report, Orsted corroborated a preliminary forecast for 2024 profits at 24.8 billion crowns.

Orsted's newly appointed CEO, Rasmus Errboe, acknowledged the difficulties encountered through 2024 and emphasized the company's proactive approach in responding to these headwinds, as highlighted in the earnings statement. "The year 2024 proved to be a challenging year for the industry and for Orsted," Errboe stated, reinforcing the company's strategy to address ongoing market pressures.

This strategic adjustment by Orsted occurs against the backdrop of a broader struggle within the offshore wind industry, with challenges partly exacerbated by policy shifts such as the suspension of offshore wind leases by former U.S. President Donald Trump last month.
