U.S. Packaging Materials Export Price per Ton July 2022
In July 2022, the packaging materials price per ton stood at $996, flattening at the previous month. Over the period from January 2022 to July 2022, it increased at an average monthly rate of +1.3%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in February 2022 when the average export price increased by 3.2% m-o-m. The export price peaked in July 2022.
Prices varied noticeably by the country of destination: the country with the highest price was Japan ($1,278 per ton), while the average price for exports to Italy ($692 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From January 2022 to July 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Turkey (+2.1%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
U.S. Packaging Materials Export Prices by Type
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major types of exported product. In July 2022, the product with the highest price was folding boxboard ($1,367 per ton), while the average price for exports of paperboard case materials ($804 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From January 2022 to July 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for the following types: folding boxboard (+1.5%), while the prices for the other products experienced more modest paces of growth.
U.S. Packaging Materials Exports
In July 2022, approximately 711K tons of packaging materials were exported from the United States; which is down by -2.3% compared with the previous month. Overall, exports recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in March 2022 when exports increased by 20% m-o-m. As a result, the exports reached the peak of 824K tons. From April 2022 to July 2022, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, packaging materials exports reduced to $708M (IndexBox estimates) in July 2022. In general, exports, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in March 2022 with an increase of 21% month-to-month. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $799M. From April 2022 to July 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.
U.S. Packaging Materials Exports by Type
Paperboard case materials (451K tons) was the largest type of packaging materials exported from the United States, with a 63% share of total exports. Moreover, paperboard case materials exceeded the volume of the second product type, folding boxboard (173K tons), threefold. Wrapping paper, packaging paper and paperboard (79K tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with an 11% share.
From January 2022 to July 2022, the average monthly growth rate of the volume of export of paperboard case materials was relatively modest. With regard to the other exported products, the following average monthly rates of growth were recorded: folding boxboard (-0.4% per month) and wrapping paper, packaging paper and paperboard (-0.7% per month).
In value terms, the most traded types of packaging materials in the United States were paperboard case materials ($362M), folding boxboard ($236M) and wrapping paper, packaging paper and paperboard ($102M), with a combined 99% share of total exports. Other papers packaging lagged somewhat behind, comprising a further 1%.
Among the main product categories, other papers packaging, with a CAGR of +1.7%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other products experienced more modest paces of growth.
U.S. Packaging Materials Exports by Country
Mexico (184K tons), Canada (171K tons) and China (42K tons) were the main destinations of packaging materials exports from the United States, together comprising 56% of total exports. Guatemala, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Italy, Japan, Chile, South Korea, Honduras and Turkey lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 27%.
From January 2022 to July 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Ecuador (with a CAGR of +5.7%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest markets for packaging materials exported from the United States were Canada ($179M), Mexico ($178M) and China ($38M), with a combined 56% share of total exports. These countries were followed by Costa Rica, Japan, Guatemala, Ecuador, South Korea, Italy, Chile, Honduras and Turkey, which together accounted for a further 25%.
Ecuador, with a CAGR of +7.7%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, in terms of the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
