Panama's government has initiated a public consultation on an environmental audit of First Quantum Minerals' Cobre Panama copper mine. The source states that the Ministry of Environment (MiAmbiente) has called on all stakeholders, including environmental groups, local communities, academia, and the private sector, to participate in this process, which will continue until February 7.

Financial Implications of Cobre Panama's Closure

The closure of the Cobre Panama mine, once contributing nearly 5% of Panama's GDP and 75% of its exports, represents a significant economic challenge. Copper Export and Import Dynamics

China remains the top export destination for Panamanian copper ore, with exports valued at $1.2 billion in 2024, followed by Japan, South Korea, Spain, and Germany. Japan imported $475.1 million, South Korea $281.7 million, Spain $207.1 million, and Germany $174.5 million worth of copper ore in the same year. Meanwhile, the United States was the primary importer, with a relatively modest import value of $4.5 thousand in both 2023 and 2024.

The primary aim of the audit is to explore the potential for a temporary reopening of the mine while planning for an environmentally responsible closure. The audit will evaluate environmental risks and damage, conservation status, and past interventions in the area. "The closure plan must aim to restore the area as closely as possible to its original state, thus reinstating its biodiversity and ecological functionality," the ministry emphasized.
