Peat Price in America Amounts $336 per Ton, Falling Slightly during Year

U.S. Peat Import Price per Ton August 2022

In August 2022, the peat price per ton stood at $336, remaining stable against the previous month. Overall, the import price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in February 2022 an increase of 1.8% month-to-month. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $360 per ton. From March 2022 to August 2022, the average import prices remained at a lower figure.

As there is only one major supplying country, the average price level is determined by prices for Canada.

From January 2022 to August 2022, the rate of growth in terms of prices for Canada amounted to -0.7% per month.

U.S. Peat Imports

In August 2022, purchases abroad of peat was finally on the rise to reach 133K tons for the first time since May 2022, thus ending a two-month declining trend. The total import volume increased at an average monthly rate of +3.2% from January 2022 to August 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in March 2022 when imports increased by 36% against the previous month. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at 140K tons in May 2022; however, from June 2022 to August 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, peat imports surged to $45M (IndexBox estimates) in August 2022. The total import value increased at an average monthly rate of +2.4% from January 2022 to August 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in March 2022 with an increase of 32% month-to-month. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at $48M in May 2022; however, from June 2022 to August 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

U.S. Peat Imports by Country

In August 2022, Canada (129K tons) was the main supplier of peat to the United States, accounting for a approximately 97% share of total imports.

From January 2022 to August 2022, the average monthly rate of growth in terms of volume from Canada stood at +3.6%.

In value terms, Canada ($43M) constituted the largest supplier of peat to the United States.

From January 2022 to August 2022, the average monthly growth rate of value from Canada stood at +2.9%.
