Permanent Magnet Price in America Drops 16% to $604 per Ton

U.S. Permanent Magnet Import Price per Ton August 2022

In August 2022, the permanent magnet price per ton stood at $604, which is down by -15.6% against the previous month. Over the last seven months, it increased at an average monthly rate of +1.9%. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in June 2022 when the average import price increased by 31% m-o-m. Over the period under review, average import prices reached the peak figure at $715 per ton in July 2022, and then fell remarkably in the following month.

Prices varied noticeably by the country of origin: the country with the highest price was Japan ($746 per ton), while the price for Indonesia ($104 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From January 2022 to August 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by China (+3.9%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.

U.S. Permanent Magnet Import Prices by Type

Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major supplied products. In August 2022, the product with the highest price was non-metal permanent magnets ($610 per ton), while the price for metal permanent magnets totaled $603 per ton.

From January 2022 to August 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by non-metal permanent magnet (+2.9%).

U.S. Permanent Magnet Imports

After two months of decline, purchases abroad of permanent magnets increased by 40% to 124K tons in August 2022. The total import volume increased at an average monthly rate of +2.2% from January 2022 to August 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain months. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in May 2022 when imports increased by 48% month-to-month. As a result, imports reached the peak of 142K tons. From June 2022 to August 2022, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, permanent magnet imports soared to $75M (IndexBox estimates) in August 2022. The total import value increased at an average monthly rate of +4.2% over the period from January 2022 to August 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in May 2022 when imports increased by 24% month-to-month. Imports peaked in August 2022.

U.S. Permanent Magnet Imports by Type

In August 2022, metal permanent magnets (108K tons) constituted the largest type of permanent magnet supplied to the United States, with a 86% share of total imports. Moreover, metal permanent magnets exceeded the figures recorded for the second-largest type, non-metal permanent magnets (17K tons), sixfold.

From January 2022 to August 2022, the average monthly rate of growth in terms of the volume of import of metal permanent magnets totaled +2.3%.

In value terms, metal permanent magnets ($65M) constituted the largest type of permanent magnet supplied to the United States, comprising 86% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by non-metal permanent magnets ($10M), with a 14% share of total imports.

U.S. Permanent Magnet Imports by Country

In August 2022, China (96K tons) constituted the largest permanent magnet supplier to the United States, accounting for a 77% share of total imports. Moreover, permanent magnet imports from China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Indonesia (10K tons), tenfold. Japan (4.2K tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 3.3% share.

From January 2022 to August 2022, the average monthly rate of growth in terms of volume from China was relatively modest. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average monthly rates of imports growth: Indonesia (+53.4% per month) and Japan (+0.5% per month).

In value terms, China ($61M) constituted the largest supplier of permanent magnet to the United States, comprising 81% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Japan ($3.1M), with a 4.1% share of total imports. It was followed by Germany, with a 2.5% share.

From January 2022 to August 2022, the average monthly rate of growth in terms of value from China totaled +4.8%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average monthly rates of imports growth: Japan (+2.5% per month) and Germany (-0.3% per month).
