Peruvian Bretana Crude Gains Foothold in U.S. as Mexican Supplies Dwindle

In a notable shift in the oil trade landscape, Peru's niche Bretana crude oil is earning a place in the U.S. market, starting with the first shipment to the U.S. Gulf Coast. Yahoo Finance reports that this move comes as U.S. refiners search for alternatives to the decreasing availability of Mexican heavy crude.

Bretana, a heavy but sweet type of crude with low metal content, is produced in the Peruvian Amazon. Exported predominantly, about 90% of Bretana is shipped abroad, primarily managed by Houston-based Novum Energy which buys and arranges its transport.

Recent data from IndexBox reveals that Peru's crude oil exports were valued at USD 424.5 million in 2023, with Bretana finding significant markets globally. Major importers of Peruvian crude include Brazil and the U.S., with respective values of USD 181.5 million and USD 175.1 million in 2023. Other notable importers are Chile, the Netherlands, and various European markets.

However, Peru's import market for crude was significantly larger, amounting to USD 3.2 billion in 2023. Among the leading suppliers to Peru, Brazil ranked highest, contributing USD 813.6 million worth, followed by the United States with USD 695.9 million, and Ecuador and Nigeria also being key players.

PetroTal Corp, responsible for the Bretana oilfield, is planning further production expansion despite logistical hurdles such as export halts amid infrastructure challenges with Petroperu's pipeline, and the reliance on barge transport. These challenges have impacted their ability to consistently export, but hopes remain as negotiations for improved pipeline access proceed.
