Pessimism Prevails as German Companies Anticipate Challenging 2025

In a recent survey conducted by the Ifo institute, the outlook for German businesses appears notably pessimistic, with a mere 12.6% of companies expecting an improvement in business conditions by 2025. (Reuters). This sentiment comes as the German economy grapples with ongoing challenges such as weak global demand, high costs, and an industrial slowdown.

"No sector is really optimistic about 2025. A lot of work awaits the new German government," stated Klaus Wohlrabe, head of surveys at Ifo. These concerns are further compounded by the fact that the economy is underperforming, with expectations for continued contraction through 2024 and into 2025.

The construction industry expressed the most significant pessimism, with less than 5% of companies expecting a business upturn in 2025. In contrast, 15.7% of firms within the manufacturing sector projected an improvement in their business conditions. The chemical industry, Germany's third-largest sector, showed a slight increase in optimism, with 18.2% anticipating growth.
