Philippine Central Bank Considers Gradual Rate Cuts in 2025

In a move to support economic growth, the Philippine central bank Governor Eli Remolona announced plans to reduce the benchmark interest rate by a total of 50 basis points this year. According to a report from Bloomberg, the first 25-basis point cut may occur within the first half of the year, with a subsequent quarter-point reduction expected in the latter half. This decision comes as part of a strategic slowdown in policy easing by the monetary authorities.

Last year, the BSP reduced its key rate by 75 basis points, bringing it to a two-year low of 5.75%, as inflationary pressures eased. The central bank projects inflation to remain in control, anticipating a range between 2.5% and 3.3% for January, slightly down from the 2.9% experienced in December. Governor Remolona emphasized that inflation is expected to stay within the 2%-4% target range throughout this year.

The central bank's policy-setting meeting is scheduled for February 13, where further discussions on monetary policy adjustments will take place. Additionally, the consideration to lower the banks' reserve requirement ratio (RRR) by another 200 basis points around mid-year is on the table. This potential move is aimed at injecting liquidity into the financial system to stimulate one of Asia's fastest-growing economies.

In October, the central bank last reduced the RRR to 7% for large banks, releasing approximately $7 billion in liquidity into the market. Despite the Philippines' GDP growth falling short of government targets—registering a 5.6% expansion last year due to lower investment, consumption, and farm output—officials remain optimistic about the economic outlook for 2025. Remolona reassured that a 'hard landing' is not anticipated, negating the need for a more aggressive 100-basis point rate cut.
