Philippines Sovereign Wealth Fund Acquires Stake in Synergy Grid

The Philippines is set to enhance its oversight over a vital national infrastructure with its sovereign wealth fund's acquisition of a 20% stake in Synergy Grid & Development Phils. Inc. for 19.7 billion pesos ($337 million). According to Bloomberg, this strategic move allows the government a substantial role in the operation of the China-backed National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP), ensuring greater transparency and bolstering energy security.

The Maharlika Investment Corp., the vehicle facilitating this investment, secured the preferred shares at 15 pesos each. Company President and CEO Rafael Consing Jr. announced on Tuesday that this deal promises a dividend yield of 6% in the initial three years, potentially increasing to 8% as shares become common stocks.

This landmark acquisition is Maharlika's inaugural investment since its founding in 2023, set to mitigate foreign influence over critical infrastructure. "In the end, we found a good solution to everyone's concern," stated President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., who witnessed the signing of the binding agreement on Monday.

IndexBox data reveals that Synergy Grid, owning 40.2% of NGCP, saw its shares surge by nearly 11% following the announcement. NGCP, with a 40% stake held by China's State Grid Corp., has faced legislative scrutiny concerning Chinese ownership and project delays.

Rafael Consing Jr. also disclosed potential aspirations for acquiring shares of NGCP held by China's State Grid if opportunities arise, although no discussions with the Chinese entity have been conducted yet. This investment grants Maharlika two board seats each at Synergy and NGCP, enhancing government insight into operational processes.

The strategy is funded by capital infusions from state banks, including the Development Bank of the Philippines and the Land Bank of the Philippines. As the NGCP continues managing the nation's power transmission system since 2009 under a 25-year renewable concession, this new development signifies a pivotal step towards ensuring energy sovereignty and investment diversification for the Philippine government.
