In May 2022, the pineapple price per ton amounted to $602 (CIF, US), approximately mirroring the previous month. In general, the import price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in Apr 2022 an increase of 1.7% m-o-m. Over the period under review, average import prices reached the maximum at $604 per ton in Feb 2022; however, from Mar 2022 to May 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major supplying countries. In May 2022, the country with the highest price was Mexico ($699 per ton), while the price for Honduras ($552 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From Jan 2022 to May 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Mexico (+2.7%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced mixed trend patterns.
U.S. Pineapple Imports
Pineapple imports into the United States soared to 133K tons in May 2022, picking up by 23% against the previous month's figure. In general, total imports indicated a strong increase from Jan 2022 to May 2022: its volume increased at an average monthly rate of +10.3% over the last four - month period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on May 2022 figures, imports increased by +47.8% against Feb 2022 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in Mar 2022 with an increase of 29% m-o-m. Imports peaked in May 2022 and are likely to see gradual growth in the immediate term.
In value terms, pineapple imports surged to $80M (IndexBox estimates) in May 2022. Overall, total imports indicated a buoyant expansion from Jan 2022 to May 2022: its value increased at an average monthly rate of +10.3% over the last four - month period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on May 2022 figures, imports increased by +48.6% against Jan 2022 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in Mar 2022 with an increase of 27% month-to-month. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs in May 2022 and are likely to continue growth in the near future.
U.S. Pineapple Imports by Country
In May 2022, Costa Rica (114K tons) constituted the largest supplier of pineapple to the United States, with a 86% share of total imports. Moreover, pineapple imports from Costa Rica exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Honduras (8.8K tons), more than tenfold.
From Jan 2022 to May 2022, the average monthly growth rate of volume from Costa Rica amounted to +9.6%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average monthly rates of imports growth: Honduras (+31.5% per month) and Mexico (+7.1% per month).
In value terms, Costa Rica ($67M) constituted the largest supplier of pineapple to the United States, comprising 84% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was occupied by Honduras ($4.9M), with a 6.1% share of total imports.
From Jan 2022 to May 2022, the average monthly rate of growth in terms of value from Costa Rica stood at +9.7%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average monthly rates of imports growth: Honduras (+31.4% per month) and Mexico (+10.0% per month).
