Planet Secures $230 Million Contract to Boost Pelican Satellite Fleet

Satellite imagery powerhouse Planet has inked a monumental $230 million contract, marking a significant milestone in its Pelican satellite expansion, CNBC reports. The agreement, with an undisclosed long-standing partner in the Asia-Pacific region, is set to propel Planet's entrance into the satellite services market.

Planet, renowned for its broad satellite network which includes over 200 orbiting devices, embarked on the Pelican satellite project in 2021. The new contract expedites the rollout of up to 32 high-powered Pelican satellites, building on the success of their initial deployment earlier this month—the advanced Pelican-2 satellite featuring Nvidia's Jetson AI platform. This strategic move rounds out their financial strategy to support more satellite builds, thus accelerating their deployment pace.

This development aligns with Planet's historic public journey that began in 2021 during the SPAC boom. Since then, despite facing stock declines and operational hurdles, Planet shares have shown resilience, more than doubling in the last 12 months, according to FactSet data.
