Poland's September 2023 Beef Exports Soar to $225M

In September 2023, after three months of decline, there was significant growth in shipments abroad of beef (cattle meat), when their volume increased by 26% to 37K tons. The total export volume increased at an average monthly rate of +1.0% from September 2022 to September 2023; the trend pattern remained consistent, with only minor fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, beef exports soared to $225M (IndexBox estimates) in September 2023. The total export value increased at an average monthly rate of +1.6% over the period from September 2022 to September 2023; the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in March 2023 when exports increased by 25% m-o-m. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $232M. Exports by Country

Italy (7.5K tons), Germany (5.3K tons) and Turkey (3.7K tons) were the main destinations of beef exports from Poland, with a combined 45% share of total exports.

From September 2022 to September 2023, the biggest increases were in Turkey (with a CAGR of +60.8%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Italy ($47M), Germany ($32M) and Turkey ($22M) constituted the largest markets for beef exported from Poland worldwide, together comprising 45% of total exports.

Turkey, with a CAGR of +56.5%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, in terms of the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Exports by Type

Fresh or chilled bone-in cuts (excluding carcasses and half-carcasses) of bovine meat (15K tons), fresh or chilled boneless cuts of bovine meat (10K tons) and frozen boneless cuts of bovine meat (7K tons) were the main products of beef exports from Poland, with a combined 88% share of total exports. Fresh or chilled carcasses and half-carcasses of bovine meat, frozen bone-in cuts (excluding carcasses and half-carcasses) of bovine meat and frozen carcasses and half-carcasses of bovine meat lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 12%.

From September 2022 to September 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the major product types, was attained by fresh or chilled carcasses and half-carcasses of bovine meat (with a CAGR of +7.9%), while the other products experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the most traded types of beef (cattle meat) in Poland were fresh or chilled bone-in cuts (excluding carcasses and half-carcasses) of bovine meat ($86M), fresh or chilled boneless cuts of bovine meat ($75M) and frozen boneless cuts of bovine meat ($41M), together accounting for 90% of total exports. These products were followed by fresh or chilled carcasses and half-carcasses of bovine meat, frozen bone-in cuts (excluding carcasses and half-carcasses) of bovine meat and frozen carcasses and half-carcasses of bovine meat, which together accounted for a further 10%.

Fresh or chilled carcasses and half-carcasses of bovine meat, with a CAGR of +8.7%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, in terms of the main product categories over the period under review, while shipments for the other products experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

In September 2023, the beef price stood at $6,146 per ton (FOB, Poland), with a decrease of -2.3% against the previous month. Over the period under review, the export price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in December 2022 an increase of 6.6% m-o-m. The export price peaked at $6,461 per ton in June 2023; however, from July 2023 to September 2023, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by the country of destination: the country with the highest price was Israel ($8,889 per ton), while the average price for exports to the Netherlands ($5,094 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From September 2022 to September 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to France (+1.1%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
