Poland's Carbon Imports Plummet to $470M in 2023
Poland Carbon Imports
In 2023, supplies from abroad of carbon (carbon blacks and other forms of carbon) decreased by -31.9% to 327K tons for the first time since 2020, thus ending a two-year rising trend. Overall, imports, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2022 when imports increased by 26%. As a result, imports attained the peak of 479K tons, and then contracted significantly in the following year.
In value terms, carbon imports reduced rapidly to $470M (IndexBox estimates) in 2023. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw a perceptible expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2022 with an increase of 95% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of $748M, and then shrank remarkably in the following year.

Imports by Country
In 2023, Russia (149K tons) constituted the largest carbon supplier to Poland, accounting for a 46% share of total imports. Moreover, carbon imports from Russia exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Germany (48K tons), threefold. the Czech Republic (33K tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 10% share.
From 2013 to 2023, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from Russia totaled -4.4%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Germany (+18.8% per year) and the Czech Republic (+1.0% per year).
In value terms, Russia ($159M) constituted the largest supplier of carbon (carbon blacks and other forms of carbon) to Poland, comprising 34% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Germany ($68M), with a 14% share of total imports. It was followed by the Czech Republic, with a 13% share.
From 2013 to 2023, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from Russia totaled -5.8%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Germany (+20.6% per year) and the Czech Republic (+5.0% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2023, the carbon price stood at $1,440 per ton (CIF, Poland), waning by -7.7% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, saw a modest expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2022 an increase of 55% against the previous year. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $1,560 per ton, and then reduced in the following year.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Hungary ($2,499 per ton), while the price for Russia ($1,065 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2013 to 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Hungary (+5.3%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
