Poland's September 2023 Carbon Import Plummets to $29M

Poland Carbon Imports

In September 2023, imports of carbon (carbon blacks and other forms of carbon) into Poland fell to 23K tons, remaining constant against August 2023 figures. Over the period under review, imports showed a perceptible decline. The growth pace was the most rapid in March 2023 with an increase of 44% month-to-month.

Imports by Country

In September 2023, Russia (10K tons) constituted the largest carbon supplier to Poland, with a 45% share of total imports. Moreover, carbon imports from Russia exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Germany (3.8K tons), threefold. The Czech Republic (2.7K tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 12% share.

From September 2022 to September 2023, the average monthly growth rate of volume from Russia totaled -3.4%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average monthly rates of imports growth: Germany (-3.8% per month) and the Czech Republic (+1.8% per month).

In value terms, the largest carbon suppliers to Poland were Russia ($10M), the Czech Republic ($5.1M) and Germany ($4.1M), with a combined 65% share of total imports.

In terms of the main suppliers, the Czech Republic, with a CAGR of +1.3%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced a decline.

Import Prices by Country

In September 2023, the carbon price stood at $1,258 per ton (CIF, Poland), declining by -8.9% against the previous month. In general, the import price recorded a noticeable slump. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in December 2022 an increase of 5.8% m-o-m. The import price peaked at $1,706 per ton in September 2022; however, from October 2022 to September 2023, import prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by the country of origin: the country with the highest price was Hungary ($2,346 per ton), while the price for Russia ($956 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From September 2022 to September 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Ukraine (+1.0%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced mixed trend patterns.
