Poland Hardboard Exports
In 2023, shipments abroad of hardboard decreased by -31.9% to 311K cubic meters, falling for the second year in a row after two years of growth. Overall, exports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 with an increase of 15%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at 497K cubic meters in 2021; however, from 2022 to 2023, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, hardboard exports declined markedly to $229M (IndexBox estimates) in 2023. In general, total exports indicated slight growth from 2013 to 2023: its value increased at an average annual rate of +1.4% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2023 figures, exports decreased by -26.6% against 2021 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when exports increased by 28% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $311M. From 2022 to 2023, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country
Germany (88K cubic meters), Lithuania (64K cubic meters) and Romania (32K cubic meters) were the main destinations of hardboard exports from Poland, with a combined 59% share of total exports. Italy, Sweden, Slovakia, Ukraine, France and Russia lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 20%.
From 2013 to 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by France (with a CAGR of +12.7%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Germany ($50M), Lithuania ($49M) and Romania ($23M) constituted the largest markets for hardboard exported from Poland worldwide, together accounting for 54% of total exports. Italy, Sweden, Ukraine, France, Slovakia and Russia lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 22%.
France, with a CAGR of +17.1%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, among the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
In 2023, the hardboard price stood at $734 per cubic meter (FOB, Poland), growing by 12% against the previous year. Over the period from 2013 to 2023, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.0%. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 an increase of 17% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average export prices reached the maximum in 2023 and is likely to see steady growth in the near future.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major overseas markets. In 2023, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Russia ($1.3 thousand per cubic meter), while the average price for exports to Germany ($574 per cubic meter) was amongst the lowest.
