Poland Maintains Interest Rates Amid Hawkish Central Bank Tone

Poland's central bank has opted to keep interest rates unchanged at 5.75% for another month, as determined by the Monetary Policy Council on Thursday. The decision aligns with the predictions of 32 economists surveyed by Bloomberg. The move follows softer than anticipated inflation rates in December, although inflation is still above the central bank's acceptable range for the sixth consecutive month. Investor attention is now fixed on central bank Governor Adam Glapinski's upcoming news conference in Warsaw, where he is expected to clarify his perspective after surprising the markets in December by stating that rate cuts are unlikely before 2026. This sentiment echoes concerns that the expiry of energy price caps in 2025 could drive inflation higher, making rate cuts impractical. Alongside rising wages, which economists note could further heighten inflation risks, the country is also experiencing slow economic growth, acting as a calming factor for price pressures.

Meanwhile, economists from ING Bank Slaski, led by Rafal Benecki, haven't completely ruled out the possibility of monetary easing sometime in the second quarter of 2025, although they acknowledge that the likelihood of delaying any cuts is growing. Interestingly, Zloty forward-rate agreements, which are derivatives used to predict Polish rate levels, indicate a market expectation of approximately 50 basis points in rate reduction over the next nine months, a decrease from the prior anticipation of 82 basis points before December's hawkish tone emerged from Glapinski.
