Poland Sees Margarine and Shortening Price Surge to $1,926 per Ton

Poland Margarine And Shortening Export Price in April 2023

In April 2023, the margarine and shortening price stood at $1,926 per ton (FOB, Poland), flattening at the previous month. Over the period from April 2022 to April 2023, it increased at an average monthly rate of +1.3%. The growth pace was the most rapid in July 2022 when the average export price increased by 19% m-o-m. The export price peaked at $2,011 per ton in August 2022; however, from September 2022 to April 2023, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by the country of destination: the country with the highest price was Greece ($2,597 per ton), while the average price for exports to Hungary ($1,677 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From April 2022 to April 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Romania (+2.8%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Poland Margarine And Shortening Export Prices by Type

Average prices varied somewhat for the major types of exported product. In April 2023, the product with the highest price was liquid margarine and edible mixtures of animal or vegetable fats ($2,378 per ton), while the average price for exports of non-liquid margarine totaled $1,835 per ton.

From April 2022 to April 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for the following types: liquid margarine and edible mixtures of animal or vegetable fats (+1.8%).

Poland Margarine And Shortening Exports

In April 2023, approximately 17K tons of margarine and shortening were exported from Poland; with a decrease of -14.2% on March 2023. In general, exports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in August 2022 with an increase of 56% against the previous month.

In value terms, margarine and shortening exports shrank to $34M (IndexBox estimates) in April 2023. Over the period under review, total exports indicated tangible growth from April 2022 to April 2023: its value increased at an average monthly rate of +2.0% over the last twelve months. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on April 2023 figures, exports decreased by -13.5% against March 2023 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in August 2022 with an increase of 58% month-to-month.

Poland Margarine And Shortening Exports by Type

Non-liquid margarine (15K tons) was the largest type of margarine and shortening exported from Poland, with a 83% share of total exports. Moreover, non-liquid margarine exceeded the volume of the second product type, liquid margarine and edible mixtures of animal or vegetable fats (2.9K tons), fivefold.

From April 2022 to April 2023, the average monthly growth rate of the volume of export of non-liquid margarine was relatively modest.

In value terms, non-liquid margarine ($27M) remains the largest type of margarine and shortening exported from Poland, comprising 79% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by liquid margarine and edible mixtures of animal or vegetable fats ($6.9M), with a 21% share of total exports.

From April 2022 to April 2023, the average monthly growth rate of the export volume of non-liquid margarine was relatively modest.

The UK (3.9K tons), Germany (2.8K tons) and Hungary (2.6K tons) were the main destinations of margarine and shortening exports from Poland, with a combined 53% share of total exports. The Netherlands, the Czech Republic, France, Sweden, Lithuania, Austria, Romania, Slovakia and Greece lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 38%.

From April 2022 to April 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by the Netherlands (with a CAGR of +6.3%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the UK ($7.6M), Germany ($5.2M) and the Netherlands ($5.1M) constituted the largest markets for margarine and shortening exported from Poland worldwide, together accounting for 53% of total exports.

The Netherlands, with a CAGR of +7.3%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, among the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
