Poland's July 2023 Import of Soybean Oil Decreases to $21M

Poland Soybean Oil Imports

In July 2023, the amount of soybean oil imported into Poland dropped modestly to 24K tons, which is down by -4.7% on the previous month's figure. Over the period under review, total imports indicated a tangible increase from July 2022 to July 2023: its volume increased at an average monthly rate of +3.0% over the last twelve-month period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on July 2023 figures, imports decreased by -11.6% against May 2023 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in May 2023 with an increase of 156% month-to-month. As a result, imports reached the peak of 27K tons. From June 2023 to July 2023, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, soybean oil imports fell modestly to $21M (IndexBox estimates) in July 2023. In general, imports saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in May 2023 with an increase of 121% m-o-m.Poland Soybean Oil Imports By Country (Million USD)

Imports by Country

In July 2023, Ukraine (22K tons) was the main supplier of soybean oil to Poland, with a 92% share of total imports. Moreover, soybean oil imports from Ukraine exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, the Netherlands (974 tons), more than tenfold.

From July 2022 to July 2023, the average monthly rate of growth in terms of volume from Ukraine totaled +4.4%.

In value terms, Ukraine ($19M) constituted the largest supplier of soybean oil to Poland, comprising 88% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by the Netherlands ($1.3M), with a 6.2% share of total imports.

From July 2022 to July 2023, the average monthly growth rate of value from Ukraine was relatively modest.

Imports by Type

In July 2023, crude soybean oil (23K tons) was the main type of soybean oil supplied to Poland, with a 97% share of total imports. Moreover, crude soybean oil exceeded the figures recorded for the second-largest type, refined soybean oil and its fractions (847 tons), more than tenfold.

From July 2022 to July 2023, the average monthly rate of growth in terms of the volume of import of crude soybean oil totaled +3.3%.

In value terms, crude soybean oil ($20M) constituted the largest type of soybean oil supplied to Poland, comprising 94% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by refined soybean oil and its fractions ($1.3M), with a 5.9% share of total imports.

Import Prices by Country

In July 2023, the soybean oil price amounted to $876 per ton (CIF, Poland), remaining relatively unchanged against the previous month. Overall, the import price, however, recorded a noticeable descent. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in November 2022 an increase of 3.7% m-o-m. The import price peaked at $1,390 per ton in August 2022; however, from September 2022 to July 2023, import prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by the country of origin: the country with the highest price was Germany ($1,488 per ton), while the price for Ukraine ($836 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From July 2022 to July 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Hungary (-0.7%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced a decline.
