July 2023 Sees a 42% Plunge in Poland's Vegetable Import Value, Dropping to $56M.

Poland Vegetable Imports

In July 2023, vegetable imports into Poland dropped remarkably to 47K tons, which is down by -44.8% on the month before. Overall, imports showed a noticeable descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in November 2022 with an increase of 39% against the previous month.

In value terms, vegetable imports plummeted to $56M (IndexBox estimates) in July 2023. In general, imports, however, showed modest growth. Imports by Country

The Netherlands (21K tons), Germany (15K tons) and Spain (2.4K tons) were the main suppliers of vegetable imports to Poland, with a combined 83% share of total imports. France, Italy, Turkey and Greece lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 4.2%.

From July 2022 to July 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by Greece (with a CAGR of +11.6%), while imports for the other leaders experienced a decline.

In value terms, the Netherlands ($29M) constituted the largest supplier of vegetable to Poland, comprising 53% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Germany ($13M), with a 24% share of total imports. It was followed by Spain, with an 8.2% share.

From July 2022 to July 2023, the average monthly growth rate of value from the Netherlands stood at +2.3%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average monthly rates of imports growth: Germany (+2.1% per month) and Spain (-4.8% per month).

Imports by Type

Tomatoes (14K tons), potatoes (11K tons) and chilies and peppers (green) (4.7K tons) were the main products of vegetable imports to Poland, together comprising 65% of total imports. These products were followed by fresh vegetables, nes, cucumbers and gherkins, onions (dry), carrots and turnips, lettuce and chicory, garlic, leeks and other alliaceous vegetables, cabbage and other brassicas, peas (green), cauliflower and broccoli, spinach, mushrooms and truffles, eggplants (aubergines), asparagus, green beans and leguminous vegetables, nes, which together accounted for a further 35%.

From July 2022 to July 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the major product types, was attained by green peas (with a CAGR of +31.7%), while imports for the other products experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, tomatoes ($22M) constituted the largest type of vegetable supplied to Poland, comprising 39% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by chilies and peppers (green) ($8.4M), with a 15% share of total imports. It was followed by fresh vegetables, nes, with a 13% share.

Import Prices by Country

In July 2023, the vegetable price stood at $1,189 per ton (CIF, Poland), rising by 4.3% against the previous month. Over the period under review, import price indicated measured growth from July 2022 to July 2023: its price increased at an average monthly rate of +3.3% over the last twelve-month period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on July 2023 figures, vegetable import price decreased by -25.6% against February 2023 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in October 2022 when the average import price increased by 36% against the previous month. Over the period under review, average import prices reached the maximum at $1,598 per ton in February 2023; however, from March 2023 to July 2023, import prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by the country of origin: the country with the highest price was Italy ($3,264 per ton), while the price for the Czech Republic ($480 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
