Poland's Woolen Yarn Price Drops 4%, Averaging $17.4 per kg

Poland Woolen Yarn Export Price in March 2023

In March 2023, the woolen yarn price stood at $17,390 per ton (FOB, Poland), reducing by -4% against the previous month. In general, the export price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in December 2022 an increase of 7.8% against the previous month. The export price peaked at $18,691 per ton in April 2022; however, from May 2022 to March 2023, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major overseas markets. In March 2023, the country with the highest price was Norway ($26,621 per ton), while the average price for exports to Portugal ($10,654 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From March 2022 to March 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Portugal (+2.9%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Poland Woolen Yarn Export Prices by Type

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major types of exported product. In March 2023, the product with the highest price was yarn of fine animal hair (carded or combed), not put up for retail sale ($116K per ton), while the average price for exports of yarn of coarse animal hair or of horsehair (including gimped horsehair yarn), whether or not put up for retail sale ($8,208 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From March 2022 to March 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for the following types: yarn of fine animal hair (carded or combed), not put up for retail sale (+20.1%), while the prices for the other products experienced more modest paces of growth.

Poland Woolen Yarn Exports

In March 2023, approximately 409 tons of yarn of wool were exported from Poland; with a decrease of -4.7% compared with February 2023. Over the period under review, exports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in January 2023 with an increase of 147% month-to-month. As a result, the exports attained the peak of 536 tons. From February 2023 to March 2023, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, woolen yarn exports shrank to $7.1M (IndexBox estimates) in March 2023. Overall, exports showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in January 2023 with an increase of 134% m-o-m. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $9.1M. From February 2023 to March 2023, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

Poland Woolen Yarn Exports by Type

Yarn of combed wool, not put up for retail sale (346 tons) was the largest type of woolen yarn exported from Poland, accounting for a 84% share of total exports. Moreover, yarn of combed wool, not put up for retail sale exceeded the volume of the second product type, yarn of carded wool, not put up for retail sale (60 tons), sixfold. Yarn of wool or of fine animal hair, put up for retail sale (3 tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 0.7% share.

From March 2022 to March 2023, the average monthly rate of growth in terms of the volume of export of yarn of combed wool, not put up for retail sale totaled -1.2%. With regard to the other exported products, the following average monthly rates of growth were recorded: yarn of carded wool, not put up for retail sale (+6.4% per month) and yarn of wool or of fine animal hair, put up for retail sale (+12.7% per month).

In value terms, yarn of combed wool, not put up for retail sale ($6.4M) remains the largest type of woolen yarn exported from Poland, comprising 90% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by yarn of carded wool, not put up for retail sale ($629K), with an 8.8% share of total exports. It was followed by yarn of wool or of fine animal hair, put up for retail sale, with a 0.5% share.

From March 2022 to March 2023, the average monthly rate of growth in terms of the export volume of yarn of combed wool, not put up for retail sale amounted to -1.1%. With regard to the other exported products, the following average monthly rates of growth were recorded: yarn of carded wool, not put up for retail sale (+9.3% per month) and yarn of wool or of fine animal hair, put up for retail sale (+7.6% per month).

Poland Woolen Yarn Exports by Country

Italy (255 tons) was the main destination for woolen yarn exports from Poland, with a 62% share of total exports. Moreover, woolen yarn exports to Italy exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Portugal (57 tons), fivefold. Germany (54 tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 13% share.

From March 2022 to March 2023, the average monthly rate of growth in terms of volume to Italy was relatively modest. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average monthly rates of exports growth: Portugal (+5.9% per month) and Germany (-5.9% per month).

In value terms, Italy ($4.7M) remains the key foreign market for woolen yarn exports from Poland, comprising 66% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Germany ($956K), with a 13% share of total exports. It was followed by Portugal, with an 8.5% share.

From March 2022 to March 2023, the average monthly growth rate of value to Italy was relatively modest. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average monthly rates of exports growth: Germany (-5.6% per month) and Portugal (+8.9% per month).
