Polish Manufacturing Sector Faces Continued Downturn in December

Poland's manufacturing sector reported further decline in December, with the Purchasing Managers Index (PMI) recording a drop to 48.2, down from 48.9 in November, as detailed by Reuters. This figure indicates the most significant deterioration since August, though expectations were slightly higher at 48.6.

A reading below 50 suggests contraction, underscoring the challenges faced by the sector. The downturn was primarily driven by sharper decreases in output and stocks of purchases. Despite the bleak headline figures, there is cautious optimism regarding a potential recovery, as new orders contracted at the slowest rate in over a year.

Insights from the IndexBox platform reveal that domestic demand began to show signs of recovery, although export demand, especially demand to Germany, remained weak. New export orders fell at the fastest rate in three months, exacerbating the sector's challenges. Employment in the manufacturing sector experienced an uptick for the third consecutive month, though at a slower pace compared to November.

While firms are hopeful about 2025, anticipating economic recovery, export growth, and new client acquisitions, the current price pressures continue to be weak. Input prices declined for the seventh time in 2024, leading to a drop in output prices as well.

Throughout the fourth quarter, Poland's PMI averaged at 48.8, surpassing the euro zone's average of 48.3. This indicates a relatively better performance for Poland despite the broader regional challenges.
