Over the last three months, it increased at an average monthly rate of +1.9%. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in Feb 2022 when the average import price increased by 2.4% m-o-m. Over the period under review, average import prices reached the maximum in Apr 2022 and is likely to see steady growth in months to come.
Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major supplying countries. In Apr 2022, the countries with the highest prices were Ireland ($4,423 per ton) and Mexico ($4,404 per ton), while the price for Brazil ($3,343 per ton) and Canada ($3,461 per ton) were amongst the lowest.
From Jan 2022 to Apr 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Mexico (+4.7%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced mixed trend patterns.
U.S. Pork Imports
In Apr 2022, after three months of growth, there was decline in overseas purchases of pork, when their volume decreased by -1.6% to 49K tons. The total import volume increased at an average monthly rate of +5.9% over the period from Jan 2022 to Apr 2022; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations in certain months. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in Mar 2022 when imports increased by 13% against the previous month. As a result, imports reached the peak of 50K tons, and then shrank modestly in the following month.
In value terms, pork imports stood at $186M (IndexBox estimates) in Apr 2022. The total import value increased at an average monthly rate of +7.9% from Jan 2022 to Apr 2022; the trend pattern remained consistent, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being observed in certain months. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in Mar 2022 when imports increased by 14% m-o-m. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs in Apr 2022 and are likely to continue growth in months to come.
U.S. Pork Imports by Country
In Apr 2022, Canada (29K tons) constituted the largest supplier of pork to the United States, accounting for a 59% share of total imports. Moreover, pork imports from Canada exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Denmark (6.1K tons), fivefold. The third position in this ranking was occupied by Mexico (3.7K tons), with a 7.4% share.
From Jan 2022 to Apr 2022, the average monthly rate of growth in terms of volume from Canada stood at +2.3%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average monthly rates of imports growth: Denmark (+15.8% per month) and Mexico (+1.8% per month).
In value terms, Canada ($100M) constituted the largest supplier of pork to the United States, comprising 54% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was occupied by Denmark ($26M), with a 14% share of total imports. It was followed by Mexico, with an 8.7% share.
From Jan 2022 to Apr 2022, the average monthly growth rate of value from Canada stood at +5.5%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average monthly rates of imports growth: Denmark (+10.7% per month) and Mexico (+6.5% per month).
