IndexBox has just published a new report: 'China - Pork (Meat Of Swine) - Market Analysis, Forecast, Size, Trends and Insights'. Here is a summary of the report's key findings.
The worry for prices to rise leaves hoarding tendencies, because feed has been raised. A breeder does not want to produce more stock when cost has risen.
Pork prices in China are at an all-time high, and if they keep going up the economy will suffer, Bloomberg says. In response, the government is imposing restrictions on hog trade, despite the fact that it wants more people to eat more meat as a means to invigorate the economy.
Beijing has been trying to control the commodity prices in China, especially coal and copper prices. The crisis in Ukraine and the pandemic had caused a shortage of resources which led to their prices skyrocketing. However pork has catapulted, this may only be the start of a lasting trend that is likely to occur for three to four years, and it may cause consumer inflation to exceed 3%.
In an attempt to avoid skyrocketing pork prices, the president of China's National Development and Reform Commission said the top economic planner is studying selling pork from state reserves.
Officials have extensive experience of trying to manage the pork market in recent years, after prices spiked to an all-time high in 2019. Prices spiked due to a nationwide outbreak of African swine fever, a fatal pig disease. Officials can try and manage herd numbers with farmers directly, encourage banks to lend to breeders, and release pork held in state reserves. However, they will be working against powerful forces as they try to tame the pork market.
The government's Covid Zero restrictions has had a major impact on the economy and is impacting households who are already struggling financially. The cost of pork, the largest food component in consumer price index, will have an amplified effect as it rises in price.
Pork prices have declined in the CPI index from a year ago. Without this, the CPI could increase by 2.4% instead of 2.1%.
Economists predict that, in the second half of the year, consumer prices could push above 3%. This makes it more difficult for the PBoC to continue easing monetary policy without risking inflation.
How the pig supply industry is being affected by fewer sows
As with any other ordinary commodity, the price of pork is determined by supply and demand. The central issue is that there are a lack of piglets because of the collapse in prices last year.
The number of pigs are on a decline, and with the 10 months it takes to grow them, China will start noticing the lack of meat soon. The reason for this is because of China's recent economic recovery as people no longer buy as much food due to taking shelter during the lockdowns.
The danger of higher meat prices in the pork industry
Feed is an important factor in the number of pigs that are raised, and it is currently a cause for concern. The ratio of hogs to corn prices is closely watched, as a lower number means farmers are unable to make a profit on each animal and will not be willing to raise more pigs.
A six-fold difference in corn and hog prices would make a hog breakeven point, but not low corn prices.
Pork prices on the rise, worsening inflation in China
The government has been trying to replenish stocks of frozen pork since markets started to recover and wholesale prices were higher than they were in March. But vendors are less interested in selling since the market is performing better, so the government has had trouble purchasing frozen pork.
