In a surprising turn of events, shares of luxury carmaker Porsche AG plunged by 7% in early Friday trading after the company announced a preliminary profit margin forecast of just 10%-12% for the year 2025, as highlighted by Reuters here. This projection falls well short of previous expectations and raises concerns over its sales performance, particularly in the Chinese market where demand has significantly weakened.

Porsche had initially set a mid-term margin target of 17%-19% during its stock market debut in 2022, making this revised forecast a "major concern" according to Stephen Reitman, an analyst at Bernstein Research. The iconic carmaker revealed plans to introduce new combustion engine and plug-in hybrid models, signifying a strategic shift amid low electric vehicle demand in Europe and rising competition from domestic brands in China.

Financial Challenges and Strategic Investments

Adding to the financial strain, Porsche disclosed that development costs and battery-related expenses at a subsidiary could reduce its 2025 operating profit by about 800 million euros ($830 million). In October 2024, the company invested 60 million euros in the financially troubled German battery maker Varta, aiming to secure access to high-performance batteries, according to data from the IndexBox platform.

The company's market valuation has suffered since its stock market launch, with shares plummeting 27% in 2024 alone. Porsche recently announced intentions to renegotiate the contracts of its chief financial officer and sales chief following intense scrutiny over their handling of the carmaker's poor financial performance and the subsequent impact on share prices.

Implications for Stakeholders

Porsche's ownership is predominantly held by Volkswagen AG, controlling 75% of the carmaker's capital, while Porsche SE, an investment firm controlled by the Piech and Porsche families, holds just over 12.5%. On Thursday, Porsche SE warned that impairments on its stake in Porsche AG could nearly double, projecting losses between 2.5 billion euros and 3.5 billion euros. Additionally, the holding firm anticipates writedowns related to Volkswagen, currently undergoing extensive cost-cutting measures, which might reach the upper bounds of 7 billion to 20 billion euros.
