Portugal to Launch Long-Awaited Lithium Tender in 2025

The Portuguese government announced plans to initiate a tender for lithium prospecting licences in 2025, aiming to establish the nation as a key European supplier of critical metals necessary for the green transition. This initiative, reported by Mining.com, outlines the center-right government's strategy, after assuming power in April, to target six promising areas in northern and central Portugal.

Under the guidance of Environment Minister Maria da Graca Carvalho, this move aligns with European goals to enhance security and reduce reliance on critical material imports from nations such as China, which currently dominates lithium processing, controlling 85% of global battery cell production. Despite Portugal being Europe's largest producer of lithium with 60,000 tonnes of known reserves, its exports largely cater to the ceramics sector, only now gearing up for electric vehicle (EV) production.

According to data retrieved from the IndexBox platform, Portugal's export value for Lithium Oxide and Hydroxide, among other compounds, stood at $34.4K in 2023, while import value reached $1.4M the same year. Notably, exports to Italy accounted for $31.8K, making it the top destination, whereas Germany led in imports, contributing $1M to Portugal's acquisition of these materials. These figures highlight the economic dynamics at play in Portugal's resource management and aspirations in the global lithium market.

Alongside these developments, the government announced forthcoming international tenders next year for new copper and gold prospecting licences. This expansion follows Portugal's established presence in copper mining, home to Europe's sixth-largest copper mine operated by Lundin Mining, whilst marking a renewed interest in gold exploration after more than three decades of inactivity.
