South Korean steel giant POSCO has witnessed a 1.1% year-on-year reduction in steel production in 2024, bringing the total output to 33.17 million tons, as reported by SteelOrbis. Concurrently, sales of rolled products saw a slight decrease of 1% compared to last year, totaling 32.8 million tons. These downturns primarily result from necessary reconstructions of blast furnaces.
Despite weak global demand, POSCO managed to increase its sales of high value-added products. However, the company faced a notable decline in their financial performance. IndexBox data reveals POSCO's operating profit in 2024 stood at KRW 2.17 trillion ($1.5 billion), a significant decrease from KRW 3.53 trillion in 2023. The company's sales revenue also saw a 5.7% drop to KRW 72.68 trillion ($50.25 billion), while net profits sharply fell by 48.6% to KRW 948 billion ($655.55 million).
POSCO Holdings is implementing various restructuring efforts to tackle the ongoing market challenges, which include divesting low-margin and non-core businesses. The company is also contemplating expanding into the US steel market and is cautious about the potential implications of import tariffs in Mexico. At present, their shipments to the US are limited to 100,000 tons, minimizing immediate impacts while cautiously exploring investment opportunities in the US mining sector.
In the broader spectrum of strategic initiatives, POSCO, in partnership with India's JSW Steel, plans a joint investment of 650 billion rupees (approximately $7.73 billion) to construct a steel plant in Odisha, India. This facility, which will begin with an initial capacity of 5 million tons annually, is set to cater to India's burgeoning steel market.
