Consumption By Country

The country with the largest volume of potato starch consumption was China (1.7M tons), accounting for 20% of total volume. Moreover, potato starch consumption in China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest consumer, India (657K tons), threefold. The third position in this ranking was held by the United States (508K tons), with a 6.1% share.

From 2013 to 2024, the average annual growth rate of volume in China was relatively modest. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: India (+1.9% per year) and the United States (-3.6% per year).

In value terms, China ($1.7B) led the market, alone. The second position in the ranking was held by India ($665M). It was followed by the United States.

In general, production continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when the production volume increased by 11% against the previous year. Over the period under review, global production reached the maximum volume at 9.1M tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2024, production failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, potato starch production totaled $8.3B in 2024 estimated in export price. Overall, production recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 17%. Global production peaked at $9.1B in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2024, production remained at a lower figure.

Production By Country

China (1.6M tons) remains the largest potato starch producing country worldwide, accounting for 20% of total volume. Moreover, potato starch production in China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, India (660K tons), twofold. Germany (393K tons) ranked third in terms of total production with a 4.7% share.

From 2013 to 2024, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume in China was relatively modest. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: India (+2.0% per year) and Germany (+0.9% per year).

Imports

World Imports of Potato Starch

In 2024, purchases abroad of potato starch decreased by -2.1% to 1M tons, falling for the third year in a row after two years of growth. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.1% over the period from 2013 to 2024; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 with an increase of 21% against the previous year. Global imports peaked at 1.3M tons in 2021; however, from 2022 to 2024, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, potato starch imports reduced to $1.1B in 2024. Over the period under review, total imports indicated perceptible growth from 2013 to 2024: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.7% over the last eleven-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2024 figures, imports increased by +57.9% against 2016 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2023 with an increase of 20%. As a result, imports reached the peak of $1.2B, and then declined in the following year.

In 2024, the United States (158K tons), distantly followed by the Netherlands (84K tons), the UK (76K tons), South Korea (76K tons) and Germany (48K tons) represented the major importers of potato starch, together making up 43% of total imports. China (40K tons), Spain (36K tons), Italy (36K tons), Belgium (35K tons) and Mexico (35K tons) took a minor share of total imports.

From 2013 to 2024, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the leading importing countries, was attained by the United States (with a CAGR of +5.1%), while imports for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average potato starch import price stood at $1,025 per ton in 2024, reducing by -8.5% against the previous year. In general, import price indicated a pronounced expansion from 2013 to 2024: its price increased at an average annual rate of +2.5% over the last eleven years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2024 figures, potato starch import price increased by +46.3% against 2021 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2023 an increase of 42%. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $1,120 per ton, and then dropped in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2024, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Italy ($1,212 per ton), while the Netherlands ($735 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

Exports

World Exports of Potato Starch

In 2024, the amount of potato starch exported worldwide fell to 967K tons, with a decrease of -6.2% against the previous year's figure. Over the period under review, total exports indicated a modest expansion from 2013 to 2024: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.1% over the last eleven years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2024 figures, exports decreased by -11.2% against 2021 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 with an increase of 39%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of 1.1M tons. From 2022 to 2024, the growth of the global exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, potato starch exports reduced to $974M in 2024. Overall, exports, however, posted buoyant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2023 when exports increased by 41%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $1.1B, and then dropped in the following year.

Exports By Country

Germany (242K tons), Denmark (242K tons) and the Netherlands (165K tons) represented roughly 67% of total exports in 2024. Poland (78K tons) held the next position in the ranking, followed by France (48K tons) and Belgium (46K tons). All these countries together took near 18% share of total exports. Austria (34K tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2013 to 2024, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the leading exporting countries, was attained by the Netherlands (with a CAGR of +19.3%), while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Germany ($254M), Denmark ($237M) and the Netherlands ($176M) constituted the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2024, together comprising 68% of global exports.

Among the main exporting countries, the Netherlands, with a CAGR of +20.5%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices By Country

In 2024, the average potato starch export price amounted to $1,008 per ton, declining by -7.7% against the previous year. Overall, export price indicated a buoyant expansion from 2013 to 2024: its price increased at an average annual rate of +5.3% over the last eleven years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2024 figures, potato starch export price increased by +47.8% against 2021 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 an increase of 46% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average export prices attained the maximum at $1,092 per ton in 2023, and then dropped in the following year.
