Potential U.S. Tariffs on BRICS May Disrupt the Global Semiconductor Supply Chain

Malaysia has raised concerns over potential global semiconductor supply chain disruptions if the U.S., under President-elect Donald Trump's administration, imposes 100% tariffs on BRICS countries.Reuters reports that Malaysia's trade minister, Tengku Zafrul Aziz, highlighted the interconnected nature of U.S. and Malaysian semiconductor industries and the potential mutual harm such tariffs could cause.

Malaysia plays a significant role in the global semiconductor industry, contributing approximately 13% to the worldwide chip testing and packaging sector. According to data from the IndexBox platform, Malaysia's export value for electronic integrated circuits and microassemblies in 2023 amounted to USD 74.7 billion. Among the top export destinations were Singapore (USD 17.5 billion), China (USD 13.3 billion), and Hong Kong SAR (USD 12.2 billion).

Despite BRICS nations' ongoing discussions about reducing their reliance on the U.S. dollar, no formal steps have been taken towards de-dollarisation. Malaysia, although aspiring to join the BRICS bloc, has yet to be officially accepted. Meanwhile, the U.S. remains Malaysia's third-largest trade partner, with the American corporations being key investors in Malaysia's semiconductor sector.

This economic interdependence highlights the delicate balance Malaysia needs to maintain amid geopolitical shifts, as any tariff imposition could threaten its pivotal status in the semiconductor supply chain.
