Power Stocks Plunge Amid AI Developments and Market Reactions

AI-exposed power stocks took a hit on Monday following new advances in artificial intelligence by the Chinese startup DeepSeek. Yahoo Finance reports that concerns are mounting regarding AI spending levels at US companies and their market dominance. According to data from the IndexBox platform, the US's largest nuclear plant operator, Constellation Energy (CEG), experienced a historic 17% drop, while electricity generator Vistra Corp (VST) fell by 21%. Meanwhile, GE Vernova (GEV), a power equipment maker, saw a 17% decline, and nuclear power startup Oklo (OKLO) dropped 21%.

DeepSeek's newly unveiled AI model, released on January 20, is considered competitive with existing models from OpenAI and other US tech giants. Remarkably, it was produced at a lower cost, using fewer AI chips than required by larger players, raising questions about the necessity of current levels of AI infrastructure investment. The demand for energy by tech giants to fuel data centers has driven power stock growth through 2024 and into the current year, with Goldman Sachs estimating a 160% growth in power demand by 2030.

Despite these recent challenges, Constellation, Vistra, and GE Vernova had previously set new records following President Donald Trump's announcement of a $500 billion project, backed by major players like SoftBank, Oracle, and OpenAI. Analysts on Wall Street have offered a more tempered response to the market sell-off. Stacy Rasgon, a managing director at Bernstein, noted that while DeepSeek's advancements are impressive, they are not revolutionary or exclusive.

Sector analysts anticipate greater insights following earnings reports from significant AI infrastructure spenders Microsoft and Meta, which could have further implications for AI chipmaker Nvidia, whose revenue heavily depends on major tech companies like Microsoft, Meta, Alphabet, and Amazon.
