Qatar Athletic Footwear Imports
In 2023, after two years of growth, there was decline in overseas purchases of athletic footwear, when their volume decreased by -4.3% to 1,000K pairs. Overall, imports, however, enjoyed a buoyant expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 with an increase of 139% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at 1M pairs in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2023, imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, athletic footwear imports shrank to $49M (IndexBox estimates) in 2023. Over the period under review, imports, however, recorded a resilient increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when imports increased by 147% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at $52M in 2022, and then fell in the following year.

Imports by Country
In 2023, China (516K pairs) constituted the largest supplier of athletic footwear to Qatar, with a 52% share of total imports. Moreover, athletic footwear imports from China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Vietnam (218K pairs), twofold. The third position in this ranking was taken by India (98K pairs), with a 9.8% share.
From 2013 to 2023, the average annual growth rate of volume from China totaled +9.0%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Vietnam (+21.4% per year) and India (+24.0% per year).
In value terms, the largest athletic footwear suppliers to Qatar were Vietnam ($18M), China ($11M) and Italy ($10M), with a combined 79% share of total imports. Indonesia, India, the United States and Cambodia lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 15%.
In terms of the main suppliers, the United States, with a CAGR of +50.6%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In 2023, the athletic footwear price amounted to $49 per pair (CIF, Qatar), which is down by -2.6% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import price indicated a resilient increase from 2013 to 2023: its price increased at an average annual rate of +6.8% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2023 figures, athletic footwear import price increased by +84.4% against 2017 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when the average import price increased by 33% against the previous year. The import price peaked at $50 per pair in 2022, and then reduced modestly in the following year.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Italy ($372 per pair), while the price for India ($13 per pair) was amongst the lowest.
From 2013 to 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Thailand (+28.8%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
