Qatar's Beef Imports Drop Significantly to $135 Million in 2023

Qatar Beef Imports

In 2023, after two years of growth, there was significant decline in overseas purchases of beef (cattle meat), when their volume decreased by -10.3% to 22K tons. Over the period under review, imports, however, enjoyed a resilient expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when imports increased by 32%. Imports peaked at 24K tons in 2022, and then reduced in the following year.

In value terms, beef imports fell to $135M (IndexBox estimates) in 2023. In general, imports, however, recorded buoyant growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2022 when imports increased by 34% against the previous year. Imports by Country

Pakistan (8.1K tons), India (4.8K tons) and Brazil (2.6K tons) were the main suppliers of beef imports to Qatar, with a combined 71% share of total imports. South Africa, Australia, the United States and New Zealand lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 19%.

From 2013 to 2023, the biggest increases were recorded for South Africa (with a CAGR of +56.2%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest beef suppliers to Qatar were Pakistan ($31M), Australia ($22M) and the United States ($19M), with a combined 53% share of total imports. Brazil, India, South Africa and New Zealand lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 35%.

In terms of the main suppliers, Brazil, with a CAGR of +49.7%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports by Type

Fresh or chilled carcasses and half-carcasses of bovine meat (7.6K tons), fresh or chilled boneless cuts of bovine meat (6.5K tons) and frozen boneless cuts of bovine meat (6.2K tons) were the main products of beef imports to Qatar, together comprising 94% of total imports.

From 2013 to 2023, the biggest increases were recorded for fresh or chilled carcasses and half-carcasses of bovine meat (with a CAGR of +27.5%), while purchases for the other products experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, fresh or chilled boneless cuts of bovine meat ($67M) constituted the largest type of beef (cattle meat) supplied to Qatar, comprising 50% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by fresh or chilled carcasses and half-carcasses of bovine meat ($29M), with a 22% share of total imports. It was followed by frozen boneless cuts of bovine meat, with a 20% share.

Import Prices by Country

In 2023, the beef price stood at $6,207 per ton (CIF, Qatar), remaining constant against the previous year. In general, the import price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when the average import price increased by 7% against the previous year. Over the period under review, average import prices hit record highs at $6,525 per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2023, import prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the United States ($25,257 per ton), while the price for India ($2,988 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2013 to 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Australia (+7.1%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
