Qatar Carbonate Imports
In 2023, supplies from abroad of carbonates and peroxocarbonates increased by 5.1% to 65K tons, rising for the third year in a row after three years of decline. In general, imports posted prominent growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 with an increase of 330% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of 107K tons. From 2018 to 2023, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, carbonate imports surged to $27M (IndexBox estimates) in 2023. Over the period under review, imports posted significant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 263%. Imports peaked in 2023 and are likely to see steady growth in the immediate term.

In 2023, Oman (46K tons) constituted the largest carbonate supplier to Qatar, accounting for a 71% share of total imports. Moreover, carbonate imports from Oman exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Turkey (3.5K tons), more than tenfold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Jordan (3.4K tons), with a 5.3% share.

In 2023, the carbonate price amounted to $416 per ton (CIF, Qatar), rising by 89% against the previous year. Overall, the import price continues to indicate a buoyant increase. As a result, import price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2023, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Vietnam ($1,068 per ton), while the price for Saudi Arabia ($355 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
