Import of Carpets in Qatar Surges by 63% to Reach $2.3M in October 2023

Qatar Carpet Imports

Carpet imports into Qatar reduced to 71K square meters in October 2023, waning by -11.3% against the month before. Over the period under review, imports recorded a abrupt downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in June 2023 with an increase of 75% against the previous month. Imports peaked at 316K square meters in October 2022; however, from November 2022 to October 2023, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, carpet imports skyrocketed to $2.3M (IndexBox estimates) in October 2023. In general, imports showed a abrupt contraction. Imports by Country

In October 2023, Saudi Arabia (31K square meters) constituted the largest carpet supplier to Qatar, accounting for a 44% share of total imports. Moreover, carpet imports from Saudi Arabia exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, China (9K square meters), threefold. Turkey (6.3K square meters) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 9% share.

From October 2022 to October 2023, the average monthly rate of growth in terms of volume from Saudi Arabia amounted to +20.1%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average monthly rates of imports growth: China (-17.5% per month) and Turkey (-14.3% per month).

In value terms, China ($253K), Turkey ($162K) and Saudi Arabia ($139K) appeared to be the largest carpet suppliers to Qatar, with a combined 24% share of total imports.

Saudi Arabia, with a CAGR of +13.4%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced a decline.

Imports by Type

In October 2023, woven carpets and other woven textile coverings (57K square meters) constituted the largest type of carpet supplied to Qatar, accounting for a 81% share of total imports. Moreover, woven carpets and other woven textile coverings exceeded the figures recorded for the second-largest type, knotted carpets and other knotted textile floor coverings (7.5K square meters), eightfold.

From October 2022 to October 2023, the average monthly rate of growth in terms of the volume of import of woven carpets and other woven textile coverings totaled -1.5%. With regard to the other supplied products, the following average monthly rates of growth were recorded: knotted carpets and other knotted textile floor coverings (-3.3% per month) and tufted carpets and other tufted textile floor coverings (-26.1% per month).

In value terms, woven carpets and other woven textile coverings ($1.2M), knotted carpets and other knotted textile floor coverings ($752K) and tufted carpets and other tufted textile floor coverings ($385K) were the most imported types of carpets and other textile floor coverings in Qatar.

Import Prices by Country

In October 2023, the carpet price amounted to $32.7 per square meter (CIF, Qatar), increasing by 84% against the previous month. Over the period under review, the import price posted buoyant growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in April 2023 an increase of 89% month-to-month. Over the period under review, average import prices hit record highs in October 2023.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In October 2023, the country with the highest price was Switzerland ($112 per square meter), while the price for Saudi Arabia ($4.4 per square meter) was amongst the lowest.

From October 2022 to October 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the United Arab Emirates (+25.5%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
