Ether Exports From Qatar Plummet to $251 Million in 2023

In 2023, shipments abroad of ethers decreased by -43.3% to 272K tons for the first time since 2020, thus ending a two-year rising trend. Over the period under review, exports saw a deep setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when exports increased by 73%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of 824K tons. From 2016 to 2023, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, ether exports shrank rapidly to $251M (IndexBox estimates) in 2023. Overall, exports continue to indicate a abrupt decline. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2022 when exports increased by 84% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $763M in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2023, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

Oman (190K tons) was the main destination for ether exports from Qatar, accounting for a 70% share of total exports. Moreover, ether exports to Oman exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, the United Arab Emirates (61K tons), threefold.

From 2013 to 2023, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Oman stood at -1.4%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: the United Arab Emirates (-6.9% per year) and Singapore (-15.1% per year).

In value terms, Oman ($173M) remains the key foreign market for ethers exports from Qatar, comprising 69% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by the United Arab Emirates ($57M), with a 23% share of total exports.

From 2013 to 2023, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to Oman totaled -3.1%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: the United Arab Emirates (-8.3% per year) and Singapore (-15.8% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2023, the ether price stood at $922 per ton (FOB, Qatar), with a decrease of -9% against the previous year. Overall, the export price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when the average export price increased by 52% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average export prices attained the maximum at $1,019 per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2023, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Average prices varied noticeably for the major export markets. In 2023, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Singapore ($996 per ton), while the average price for exports to Oman ($911 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2013 to 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Malaysia (+6.2%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.
