Qatar Fruit Imports
In 2023, supplies from abroad of fruits increased by 2.1% to 242K tons, rising for the second consecutive year after two years of decline. Overall, total imports indicated prominent growth from 2013 to 2023: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +7.0% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2023 figures, imports increased by +6.4% against 2021 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when imports increased by 28% against the previous year. Imports peaked at 245K tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2023, imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, fruit imports contracted slightly to $250M (IndexBox estimates) in 2023. Over the period under review, total imports indicated buoyant growth from 2013 to 2023: its value increased at an average annual rate of +8.3% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2023 figures, imports increased by +12.3% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 when imports increased by 24%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $253M in 2022, and then contracted in the following year.

Imports by Country
In 2023, South Africa (43K tons) constituted the largest fruit supplier to Qatar, accounting for a 18% share of total imports. Moreover, fruit imports from South Africa exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Ecuador (21K tons), twofold. Iran (20K tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with an 8.3% share.
From 2013 to 2023, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from South Africa totaled +9.6%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Ecuador (+31.3% per year) and Iran (+36.0% per year).
In value terms, South Africa ($43M), India ($24M) and Ecuador ($18M) constituted the largest fruit suppliers to Qatar, together accounting for 34% of total imports.
Ecuador, with a CAGR of +30.4%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Imports by Type
Bananas and plantains (45K tons), watermelons (35K tons) and oranges (34K tons) were the main products of fruit imports to Qatar, together accounting for 47% of total imports. Apples, lemons and limes, tangerines, mandarins, clementines, satsumas, mangoes, mangosteens and guavas, melons, grapes, non-citrus fruits not elsewhere classified, pineapples, dates, avocados, pears and quinces, peaches and nectarines, papayas, figs, plums and sloes, kiwi fruits, grapefruits, apricots and persimmons lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 53%.
From 2013 to 2023, the biggest increases were recorded for persimmons (with a CAGR of +39.8%), while purchases for the other products experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, bananas and plantains ($41M), apples ($27M) and oranges ($25M) constituted the most imported types of fruits in Qatar, together accounting for 38% of total imports. Mangoes, mangosteens and guavas, watermelons, tangerines, mandarins, clementines, satsumas, grapes, lemons and limes, melons, dates, avocados, non-citrus fruits not elsewhere classified, pineapples, figs, pears and quinces, papayas, peaches and nectarines, plums and sloes, kiwi fruits, grapefruits, apricots and persimmons lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 62%.
Import Prices by Country
In 2023, the fruit price stood at $1,032 per ton (CIF, Qatar), with a decrease of -3.4% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.2%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 an increase of 14%. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $1,107 per ton. From 2018 to 2023, the average import prices remained at a lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Lebanon ($1,786 per ton), while the price for Iran ($265 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2013 to 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Lebanon (+18.4%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
