Qatar Witnesses 3% Increase in Iron and Steel Price, Reaching $410 per Ton

Qatar Iron and Steel Export Price in May 2023

In May 2023, the iron and steel price stood at $410 per ton (FOB, Qatar), surging by 2.6% against the previous month. In general, the export price, however, continues to indicate a noticeable downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in December 2022 when the average export price increased by 42% month-to-month. Over the period under review, the average export prices hit record highs at $578 per ton in May 2022; however, from June 2022 to May 2023, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

As there is only one major export destination, the average price level is determined by prices for Kuwait.

From May 2022 to May 2023, the rate of growth in terms of prices for Oman amounted to 0.0% per month.

In May 2023, overseas shipments of iron and steel decreased by -68.5% to 35K tons for the first time since February 2023, thus ending a two-month rising trend. Overall, exports saw a deep downturn. The growth pace was the most rapid in April 2023 when exports increased by 218% m-o-m. As a result, the exports reached the peak of 110K tons, and then fell remarkably in the following month.

In value terms, iron and steel exports reduced notably to $14M (IndexBox estimates) in May 2023. Over the period under review, exports recorded a abrupt decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in April 2023 when exports increased by 231% against the previous month. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $44M, and then fell significantly in the following month.
