Qatar Lamb and Sheep Meat Imports
Lamb and sheep meat imports into Qatar shrank notably to 20K tons in 2023, which is down by -22.7% against the previous year. In general, total imports indicated a remarkable increase from 2013 to 2023: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +5.3% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2023 figures, imports decreased by -37.1% against 2018 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when imports increased by 43% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at 31K tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2023, imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, lamb and sheep meat imports dropped remarkably to $124M (IndexBox estimates) in 2023. Over the period under review, imports, however, enjoyed a strong expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when imports increased by 57%. As a result, imports reached the peak of $221M. From 2019 to 2023, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2023, Australia (7.8K tons) constituted the largest lamb and sheep meat supplier to Qatar, accounting for a 40% share of total imports. Moreover, lamb and sheep meat imports from Australia exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Tanzania (3.5K tons), twofold. South Africa (2.7K tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 14% share.

Moreover, fresh or chilled lamb carcasses and half-carcasses exceeded the figures recorded for the second-largest type, fresh or chilled sheep (excluding lamb) carcasses and half-carcasses (4.2K tons), threefold. The third position in this ranking was taken by frozen sheep (including lamb) cuts with bone in (excluding carcasses and half-carcasses) (2K tons), with a 10% share.
From 2013 to 2023, the average annual rate of growth in terms of the volume of fresh or chilled lamb carcasses and half-carcasses imports stood at +11.2%. With regard to the other supplied products, the following average annual rates of growth were recorded: fresh or chilled sheep (excluding lamb) carcasses and half-carcasses (-2.1% per year) and frozen sheep (including lamb) cuts with bone in (excluding carcasses and half-carcasses) (+4.5% per year).
In value terms, fresh or chilled lamb carcasses and half-carcasses ($70M) constituted the largest type of lamb and sheep meat supplied to Qatar, comprising 57% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by fresh or chilled sheep (excluding lamb) carcasses and half-carcasses ($27M), with a 21% share of total imports. It was followed by frozen sheep (including lamb) cuts with bone in (excluding carcasses and half-carcasses), with a 9% share.
Import Prices by Country
In 2023, the lamb and sheep meat price amounted to $6,336 per ton (CIF, Qatar), with a decrease of -14.4% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the average import price increased by 17% against the previous year. Over the period under review, average import prices reached the peak figure at $7,405 per ton in 2022, and then reduced in the following year.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was New Zealand ($10,327 per ton), while the price for Spain ($3,503 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2013 to 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Tanzania (+4.7%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
