Qatar Sees 23% Drop in MDF Imports, Revenue Falls to $23M in 2023

Qatar MDF Imports

In 2023, overseas purchases of MDF increased by 3.6% to 64K cubic meters, rising for the third consecutive year after two years of decline. In general, imports showed a resilient expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 64% against the previous year. Imports peaked in 2023 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, MDF imports shrank remarkably to $23M (IndexBox estimates) in 2023. Overall, imports saw a resilient expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 when imports increased by 143% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of $36M. Imports by Country

In 2023, Thailand (44K cubic meters) constituted the largest supplier of MDF to Qatar, accounting for a 69% share of total imports. Moreover, MDF imports from Thailand exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, China (12K cubic meters), fourfold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Malaysia (2.3K cubic meters), with a 3.6% share.

From 2013 to 2023, the average annual growth rate of volume from Thailand stood at +28.9%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: China (+9.2% per year) and Malaysia (-5.7% per year).

In value terms, Thailand ($13M) constituted the largest supplier of MDF to Qatar, comprising 58% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by China ($4.4M), with a 19% share of total imports. It was followed by Turkey, with a 7.4% share.

From 2013 to 2023, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from Thailand stood at +29.1%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: China (+6.8% per year) and Turkey (+21.9% per year).

Imports by Type

In 2023, medium density fibreboard (MDF) of thickness over 9 mm (50K cubic meters) constituted the largest type of MDF supplied to Qatar, with a 78% share of total imports. Moreover, medium density fibreboard (MDF) of thickness over 9 mm exceeded the figures recorded for the second-largest type, medium density fibreboard (MDF) of thickness from 5 to 9 mm (9.8K cubic meters), fivefold.

From 2013 to 2023, the average annual rate of growth in terms of the volume of medium density fibreboard (MDF) of thickness over 9 mm imports totaled +14.5%. With regard to the other supplied products, the following average annual rates of growth were recorded: medium density fibreboard (MDF) of thickness from 5 to 9 mm (+10.7% per year) and medium density fibreboard (MDF) of thickness under 5 mm (+2.9% per year).

In value terms, medium density fibreboard (MDF) of thickness over 9 mm ($18M) constituted the largest type of MDF supplied to Qatar, comprising 78% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by medium density fibreboard (MDF) of thickness from 5 to 9 mm ($3.5M), with a 15% share of total imports.

Import Prices by Country

In 2023, the mdf price stood at $355 per cubic meter (CIF, Qatar), reducing by -25.8% against the previous year. Overall, the import price continues to indicate a deep downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when the average import price increased by 61%. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $851 per cubic meter. From 2016 to 2023, the average import prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2023, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Spain ($1.3 thousand per cubic meter), while the price for Thailand ($297 per cubic meter) was amongst the lowest.

From 2013 to 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Spain (+10.3%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
