Qatar Root and Tuber Imports
In 2023, supplies from abroad of roots and tubers increased by 12% to 68K tons, rising for the fourth consecutive year after two years of decline. Overall, imports showed a prominent expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of 67% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum in 2023 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.
In value terms, root and tuber imports soared to $27M (IndexBox estimates) in 2023. In general, imports enjoyed a resilient increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 with an increase of 52%. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure in 2023 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country
In 2023, Pakistan (38K tons) constituted the largest supplier of root and tuber to Qatar, accounting for a 56% share of total imports. Moreover, root and tuber imports from Pakistan exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Syrian Arab Republic (7.3K tons), fivefold. India (3.6K tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 5.3% share.
From 2013 to 2023, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from Pakistan stood at +18.1%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Syrian Arab Republic (+30.8% per year) and India (+22.7% per year).
In value terms, Pakistan ($12M) constituted the largest supplier of roots and tubers to Qatar, comprising 44% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Syrian Arab Republic ($2.7M), with a 10% share of total imports. It was followed by India, with an 8.2% share.
From 2013 to 2023, the average annual growth rate of value from Pakistan totaled +14.4%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Syrian Arab Republic (+29.6% per year) and India (+26.8% per year).
Imports by Type
In 2023, potatoes (64K tons) was the main type of roots and tubers supplied to Qatar, accounting for a 93% share of total imports. It was followed by sweet potatoes (1.8K tons), with a 2.7% share of total imports. Roots and tubers, nes (1.6K tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 2.3% share.
From 2013 to 2023, the average annual growth rate of the volume of potatoes imports totaled +9.1%. With regard to the other supplied products, the following average annual rates of growth were recorded: sweet potatoes (+37.5% per year) and roots and tubers, nes (+17.0% per year).
In value terms, potatoes ($23M) constituted the largest type of roots and tubers supplied to Qatar, comprising 85% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by sweet potatoes ($1.5M), with a 5.6% share of total imports. It was followed by roots and tubers, nes, with a 5.4% share.
Import Prices by Country
In 2023, the root and tuber price amounted to $391 per ton (CIF, Qatar), increasing by 4.6% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 an increase of 19% against the previous year. Over the period under review, average import prices attained the peak figure at $427 per ton in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2023, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2023, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was France ($826 per ton), while the price for Iran ($169 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2013 to 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Lebanon (+7.2%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
