Qatar's Import of Root and Tuber Surges by 58% Reaching $2.5M in June 2023

Qatar Root and Tuber Imports

Root and tuber imports into Qatar skyrocketed to 6.6K tons in June 2023, increasing by 75% compared with the previous month. Over the period under review, total imports indicated a noticeable expansion from June 2022 to June 2023: its volume increased at an average monthly rate of +4.0% over the last twelve months. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on June 2023 figures, imports increased by +74.7% against May 2023 indices.

In value terms, root and tuber imports skyrocketed to $2.5M (IndexBox estimates) in June 2023. In general, total imports indicated a noticeable increase from June 2022 to June 2023: its value increased at an average monthly rate of +4.7% over the last twelve months. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Imports by Country

In June 2023, Pakistan (3.1K tons) constituted the largest supplier of root and tuber to Qatar, with a 47% share of total imports. Moreover, root and tuber imports from Pakistan exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Syrian Arab Republic (760 tons), fourfold. The third position in this ranking was held by Lebanon (598 tons), with a 9.1% share.

From June 2022 to June 2023, the average monthly growth rate of volume from Pakistan was relatively modest. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average monthly rates of imports growth: Syrian Arab Republic (+20.6% per month) and Lebanon (-3.8% per month).

In value terms, Pakistan ($1M) constituted the largest supplier of root and tuber to Qatar, comprising 42% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Syrian Arab Republic ($279K), with an 11% share of total imports. It was followed by India, with a 9% share.

From June 2022 to June 2023, the average monthly rate of growth in terms of value from Pakistan stood at +1.7%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average monthly rates of imports growth: Syrian Arab Republic (+22.6% per month) and India (+1.6% per month).

Imports by Type

In June 2023, potatoes (6.2K tons) was the main type of root and tuber supplied to Qatar, with a 94% share of total imports. Moreover, potatoes exceeded the figures recorded for the second-largest type, sweet potatoes (252 tons), more than tenfold. Cassava (86 tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 1.3% share.

From June 2022 to June 2023, the average monthly rate of growth in terms of the volume of import of potatoes amounted to +4.1%. With regard to the other supplied products, the following average monthly rates of growth were recorded: sweet potatoes (+11.0% per month) and cassava (+7.7% per month).

In value terms, potatoes ($2.2M) constituted the largest type of root and tuber supplied to Qatar, comprising 88% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by sweet potatoes ($159K), with a 6.4% share of total imports. It was followed by roots and tubers, nes, with a 2.9% share.

Import Prices by Country

In June 2023, the root and tuber price amounted to $380 per ton (CIF, Qatar), shrinking by -9.6% against the previous month. Over the period under review, the import price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in May 2023 when the average import price increased by 29% month-to-month. The import price peaked at $467 per ton in December 2022; however, from January 2023 to June 2023, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major supplying countries. In June 2023, the countries with the highest prices were India ($472 per ton) and Jordan ($414 per ton), while the price for Pakistan ($336 per ton) and Lebanon ($351 per ton) were amongst the lowest.

From June 2022 to June 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Turkey (+7.6%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
