Qatar Salt Imports
In 2024, the amount of salt and pure sodium chloride imported into Qatar skyrocketed to 648K tons, rising by 18% on the previous year. Overall, total imports indicated a noticeable expansion from 2014 to 2024: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.0% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2024 figures, imports increased by +13.3% against 2019 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 when imports increased by 132%. Imports peaked in 2024 and are likely to see gradual growth in the immediate term.
In value terms, salt imports rose sharply to $28M (IndexBox estimates) in 2024. In general, total imports indicated a perceptible expansion from 2014 to 2024: its value increased at an average annual rate of +2.5% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2024 figures, imports increased by +67.0% against 2021 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 92% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure in 2024 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country
In 2024, India (489K tons) constituted the largest supplier of salt to Qatar, accounting for a 75% share of total imports. Moreover, salt imports from India exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Saudi Arabia (122K tons), fourfold. The third position in this ranking was taken by the Netherlands (2.4K tons), with a 0.4% share.
From 2014 to 2024, the average annual growth rate of volume from India was relatively modest. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Saudi Arabia (+22.4% per year) and the Netherlands (-2.4% per year).
In value terms, India ($21M) constituted the largest supplier of salt and pure sodium chloride to Qatar, comprising 74% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Saudi Arabia ($2.8M), with a 9.8% share of total imports. It was followed by the Netherlands, with a 9.5% share.
From 2014 to 2024, the average annual growth rate of value from India totaled +1.6%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Saudi Arabia (+9.7% per year) and the Netherlands (+5.9% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2024, the salt price stood at $44 per ton (CIF, Qatar), with a decrease of -5.3% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2022 an increase of 31%. Over the period under review, average import prices attained the peak figure at $46 per ton in 2023, and then dropped in the following year.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2024, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was India ($43 per ton), while the price for Saudi Arabia stood at $23 per ton.
From 2014 to 2024, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by India (+2.1%).
