Qatar Sheep And Goat Meat Imports
Sheep and goat meat imports into Qatar contracted to 21K tons in 2023, waning by -13.2% on the year before. Overall, total imports indicated a modest increase from 2013 to 2023: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.9% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2023 figures, imports increased by +4.6% against 2021 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 with an increase of 34% against the previous year. Imports peaked at 34K tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2023, imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, sheep and goat meat imports fell notably to $127M (IndexBox estimates) in 2023. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate pronounced growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 49%. As a result, imports attained the peak of $231M. From 2019 to 2023, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country
Australia (7.8K tons), Tanzania (4.2K tons) and South Africa (2.7K tons) were the main suppliers of sheep and goat meat imports to Qatar, together accounting for 72% of total imports.
From 2013 to 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by Tanzania (with a CAGR of +590.8%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Australia ($51M) constituted the largest supplier of sheep and goat meat to Qatar, comprising 40% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Tanzania ($23M), with an 18% share of total imports. It was followed by South Africa, with a 15% share.

In value terms, lamb and sheep meat ($124M) constituted the largest type of sheep and goat meat supplied to Qatar, comprising 97% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by goat meat ($3.4M), with a 2.7% share of total imports.
Import Prices by Country
In 2023, the sheep and goat meat price stood at $6,176 per ton (CIF, Qatar), which is down by -13.2% against the previous year. Over the period from 2013 to 2023, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.3%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when the average import price increased by 21% against the previous year. The import price peaked at $7,118 per ton in 2022, and then contracted in the following year.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2023, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was New Zealand ($10,327 per ton), while the price for Spain ($3,503 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
