Qatar Experiences Sharp Decline in Tea Imports to $2M in June 2023

In June 2023, the amount of tea imported into Qatar dropped to 450 tons, reducing by -10.8% against the month before. In general, imports continue to indicate a pronounced descent. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in September 2022 when imports increased by 97% month-to-month.

In value terms, tea imports declined sharply to $2M (IndexBox estimates) in June 2023. Over the period under review, imports recorded a slight descent. The growth pace was the most rapid in September 2022 with an increase of 186% month-to-month.Qatar Tea Imports By Country (Thousand USD)

Imports by Country

In June 2023, Kenya (265 tons) constituted the largest supplier of tea to Qatar, accounting for a 59% share of total imports. Moreover, tea imports from Kenya exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, India (113 tons), twofold. The third position in this ranking was held by Sri Lanka (34 tons), with a 7.4% share.

From June 2022 to June 2023, the average monthly growth rate of volume from Kenya amounted to -4.4%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average monthly rates of imports growth: India (+0.4% per month) and Sri Lanka (+5.5% per month).

In value terms, Kenya ($668K), India ($491K) and Sri Lanka ($273K) were the largest tea suppliers to Qatar, with a combined 72% share of total imports.

In terms of the main suppliers, Sri Lanka, with a CAGR of +4.8%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced mixed trend patterns.

Imports by Type

In June 2023, tea, black; (fermented) and partly fermented tea, in immediate packings of a content exceeding 3kg (375 tons) constituted the largest type of tea supplied to Qatar, accounting for a 83% share of total imports. Moreover, tea, black; (fermented) and partly fermented tea, in immediate packings of a content exceeding 3kg exceeded the figures recorded for the second-largest type, tea, black; (fermented) and partly fermented tea, in immediate packings of a content not exceeding 3kg (62 tons), sixfold.

From June 2022 to June 2023, the average monthly rate of growth in terms of the volume of import of tea, black; (fermented) and partly fermented tea, in immediate packings of a content exceeding 3kg amounted to -3.2%. With regard to the other supplied products, the following average monthly rates of growth were recorded: tea, black; (fermented) and partly fermented tea, in immediate packings of a content not exceeding 3kg (-2.0% per month) and tea, green; (not fermented), in immediate packings of a content not exceeding 3kg (+2.4% per month).

In value terms, tea, black; (fermented) and partly fermented tea, in immediate packings of a content exceeding 3kg ($1.2M), tea, black; (fermented) and partly fermented tea, in immediate packings of a content not exceeding 3kg ($636K) and tea, green; (not fermented), in immediate packings of a content not exceeding 3kg ($213K) constituted the most imported types of tea in Qatar.

Import Prices by Country

In June 2023, the tea price amounted to $4,446 per ton (CIF, Qatar), dropping by -33.4% against the previous month. Over the period under review, the import price, however, showed a slight increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in May 2023 an increase of 54% month-to-month. The import price peaked at $8,600 per ton in January 2023; however, from February 2023 to June 2023, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by the country of origin: the country with the highest price was Poland ($18,564 per ton), while the price for Kenya ($2,525 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From June 2022 to June 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Poland (+4.0%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
